[Homephone] CRA Scam calls last few days

Anyone else notice an uptick on calls in the last few days? I've had 4 today alone, blocking their number does nothing. Reporting is pointless. Bell has to be aware of these calls (they are 343 numbers), why isn't the RCMP actually doing anything?

Youtubers can find more information about scammers then the RCMP appears able to.

Enter the CallerID number into Google, results should suggest some websites where visitors post their "bad call" experience. With time and expectations, you'll eventually easily spot the potential fake calls, abusive area codes and learn when to press the Talk and Hang Up buttons immediately without any interaction.

Filing a complain at the DNCL (»www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/en) may do nothing immediately, it's time-consuming filling the form... and you'll never know if the RCMP started an investigation, or if the phone-spam-warehouse has been busted and shutdown. All those idiots have something in common : They never call in the middle of the night, which would result in them getting busted and taken down WAY FASTER !

My VoIP provider has a free callerID filter, which can be used with wildcards, so in your example, I would just add " 343* " to the list as there's nobody I know who lives in the the Ottawa area. A choice of routing options is provided : busy signal, hang-up, disconnected or not in service message, play your own recorded message, send to voicemail, forward to another number, etc.

Also noteworthy, if your actual phone number is 343-555-XXXX and you're receiving calls from a number that starts with 343-555, yeah, that's a VoIP robocall spoofing its CallerID, making you think it's a local call.

A lot of these calls seem to come from scammers in ROMANIA. The government should do something about these thieves.

Not that it's enforced much as it is, but would the DNCL even apply? One would think a federal crime took precedence (fraud, theft, impersonating a federal officer, etc). Some of these bozos go quite far into their threats of violence that "terrorist threats" are not far fetched.

Would be great if Bell did too, but they don't.

Which is part of the problem. They are calling from a different number then the one you are supposed to call them back on. The only thing we can do is pay the $5 extortion from Bell to do a trace (*57)... which they won't release anyway.

Or, it could be a local call. Our company cell phones are all from the same block of numbers, so that logic does not apply across the board.

Could be. Depends on where you live and your social network.

I grew up in a small town with less than 1000 residences, everyone was assigned a 819-555-3XXX and 4XXX (thereafter 7XXX for cellphones) phone number, so I obviously wouldn't block 819-555-* due to prank calls. It's different in the big cities with 2 or 3 area codes...

Most residential phone numbers comes with a Name CallerID, and most legit companies also take the time to fill the Name CID field. It's also done for most monthly cellphone services, but displays "Unavailable" for most pre-paid services eventho you had a 100$ yearly card for years...

On the flip side, telemarketing calls from big companies (in-house or external) come with identical the Name & Number CID, and it's easy to spot the pattern.
Sure, if I were a douchebag leaving my phone number to random girls, or selling stuff on Kijiji, I would take a chance in answering the phone, and hang-up as soon as I hear the annoying "Congratulations!" robocall.

Most people take the oh I will put them on teh do not call list ..... that won't help anything
Neither will reporting them to the Canadian Anti fraud center. Been there done that.
The best way to annoy ROMANIAN/ INDIAN scammers is the following :

Hello you have won a free cruise we need personal information

ME: My name is

Harry Potter , I live at 1 HuffelPufff drive. My credit card number is 43593827272839277

I did this for a while they never bothered me afterwards.

I use names like Attilla the Hun!

The latest scam is now to pretend to be Visa Card security telling you that you've had a couple of charges including iTunes or even Bit Coin. Since most banks now refuse to process payments to cryptocurrencies, that's a clear giveaway of SCAM. The other clue is that they tell you of two and expect you to approve or deny both together. That's not how the banks work!

I feel totally left out.

I've waited years to get these scam calls from Microsoft. Or CRA asking for iTunes cards yet never had happened.

I did have a robo message on my cell phone telling me I had a Warrant from the magistrate or something due to income tax fraud lol. It sounded like windows 3.11 text to voice it was awesome.

That robo message is the CRA scam version 2 ... they get you to call them and then they go through the prepaid credit card thing.

They have figured out that they don't need as many agents ... now if only they would do that with the duct cleaners.

I had a duct cleaning guy call me Saturday and it sounded for all the world like duck cleaning. So I went along with that for several minutes explaining that I don't have ducks, but I do have chickens and turkeys. He kept trying to make me understand it was ducts.

Reminded me of the Get Smart episodes with "The Claw" which he pronounced as Craw, and Smart would repeat it, the Claw would reply, "Not CRAW! CRAW!"

I've gotten the duct cleaning one before. I said you really should check the addresses of the numbers since this is an apartment so even if I had ducts I sure as fuck wouldn't be paying to get them cleaned. Yet he kept going on and on.

Mind you I would rather talk to them then the Bell lvl1 tech support or retentions. It really shouldnt take 14 phone calls to get any promotions. And each one offering a different price. All of which except the last one wasnt even better than if I logged into my account and changed the programming and internet myself.

They just use autodiallers ... calling number after number.

I tried one day to say that I needed ducts cleaned at my new address and gave them the number and address of the local police station! I couldn't deliver the message with a straight face so had to hang up!

Ironically, once, I got an Ottawa phone number for a CRA scam, ( not the above example , another time), where I took the pain to inform Ottawa police. The constable on the phone told me they were not interested !!! because of caller if spoofing. (This is in part why I blew a gasket over voip security).

A more funny story was when I was vacationing in---- Palm Beach ----. Some caribbean cruise scammer calls my cell, and says oh yeah from my office I can see people getting on board departing from the port of Palm Beach. I said, "" why don't you come outside and meet me, I'll even treat you to lunch at the Breakers Hotel."" She hung up.

Was this a robocall ?

Anyways,
- If it's important, they'll take the time to print out their request, put it in an envelope, put a stamp on it and get it delivered by Canada Post.
- If it's SUPER important, registered mail is the way to go.

« You know the address. Just send out the cops, I'll be sipping coffee in the stairs, waiting for their arrival. Have a nice day ».

I got a "scam" call the other day from a 416 number. I had a good laugh with it, it was all in Chinese, I assume.

Couldn't believe my ears when the robo-call was in Chinese.

I tell them my ducks are self-cleaning, and don't need any additional service assistance.

Yeah, the Microsoft one's another fave. Only have had a couple from the "CRA".

I like the idea of the local cop shop for the duct cleaning!!

When I changed companies 7 months ago, the office gave me a new phone # obtained via Rogers. Sadly, it seems the #'s previous owner wasn't a pillar of the community. I had gotten several calls from a collection agency on his behalf. That was legit. Once I told them the number was reissued, they stopped. I still can't get rid of the recorded porno chats that appear every 7-10 days from the US on an 800 #. Because they originate in the US, our DNCL can't do much (not within Canada), and I cannot get anywhere with the DNCL in the US.

I did something similar to the last time the duck (err, duct) cleaners called me. I had them really going, as I told them I owned a huge building with about 200 ducks. It eventually escalated to senior management, and that's when I explain the horrible accident that happened to my ducks and asking how much to clean each duck.

Damn, they were pissed off. I guess wasting 30 minutes of their time wasn't cool.
