anon posted : If a car accident took out my satellite internet, Id have much bigger issues as the dish is mounted right outside my bedroom window :D

Yes, having two unique paths out is a plan of ultimate uptime. Shortly after I first starting working where I do, there was an event that took out the fiber. That was actually our only internet outage to date that I am aware of. Never found out if it was an accident, a backhoe or what, but we lost internet for most of the afternoon.

All of the bigwigs, those intelligent people with their fancy degrees wanted to keep working so they tried to use the cellular hot sports on their company phones. Meanwhile all of our millennials were about to die because when they refreshed that browser window they tried to hide with Facebook, theyd get an error and then try in on their phone and oh noes, no wifi, now they had to use their cellular data…or did they.

By rough estimate, a good 95% of people here are Verizon Wireless customers, including our company phones. Its amazing how many people think cell phones work on magic rainbows and unicorn farts. The local Verizon tower that is around the corner from where I work used Time Warner as their fiber backhaul. So no cellular data. Well actually there was but it was so slow and inconsistent, it was at 1X speeds. Guessing it might have been a T1 or T3 backup. No matter how much I explained to people that their wonderful cell phone ultimately operates off of a landbased connection, usually in many circumstances from the hated Time Warner Cable, these high paid execs and know it all fresh out of college kids could not grasp the concept.

anon posted : Good question. Because I want to :D Just kidding.

I have both Spectrum Gig and HughesNet Gen 4 connected a dual WAN router configured for failover.

I just got a new Cisco RV340 router on Saturday as my old Cisco RV320 could not support WAN speeds over 500 or 600 Mbps. Ive been playing around with different router configurations the past few days, and have been primarily on Hughes.

Heres the long version of the short story.

Where I work, I am the entire IT department, and I cannot be without internet for remote access. Living in Upstate NY there have been times I have been stranded at home due to snow and had to work from home. Not to mention afterhours and weekend work. I live in a rural community that can get cable, thank God. But DSL is not available from the telco, cellular reception is not reliable, infact the two GSM providers have no coverage period anywhere within a mile from me. So here I am with Hughes. I originally wanted Excede aka Viasat, but at the time they stopped selling service in the geographical area that covers my beam due to capacity issues.

My employers pays for most of my HugheNet bill. Policy is that anyone that is expected to work from home gets their internet reimbursed for the cost of Standard service from their ISP. So I expense $65 of my now $115 cable internet bill. I came to an agreement with my employer following a huge snowstorm that due to the mission critical nature of some of the things I deal with I should have a secondary internet connection, and they reluctantly agreed. They agreed to reimburse me up to $50 a month for a backup connection. So I opted for the second HughesNet tier. 10 GB of data at 15 x 1 for $60/month. So Im on the hook for $10.

I guess the better alternative would be to contact my Spectrum Enterprise rep at work, and see if they can do a DIA buildout to my house with 1Gb symmetrical fiber and I can ditch the satellite and use the cable modem as back up. :) If I attempted that, I wouldnt have to worry about a backup connection as Id be out of a job :D

In the front of the office, behind the counter they had a locked cabinet, thats where the guy pulled my 210 from, and there were probably 50+ other boxes in there all wrapped up in the same style packaging as what I was handed, so I assume they were all WorldBoxes ready to be handed out. My 201 last year also didn’t require a tech install, swapped that out at an office as well.

Something was changed under the covers with my account through. I have a good friend who is in middle management at Charter locally and told me multiple times to not get the new DVR, he didn’t go into much detail but he told me that there were a ton of problems with them. So I knew what I was facing before I got it, I have no one to blame but myself. I guess I sort of got my wish, I’ve been bugging him on and off ever since the days of the SARA to Navigator conversion to sneak me on the list of non-employee beta testers :)

Instead of quoting a bunch of this I’ll respond to some points brought up.

I am currently in a mixed environment, but both of my boxes are WorldBoxes. I have a 201 that just got updated to ODN 8.1 on Thursday and I have the 210 with the Spectrum Guide. The 210 replaced a Cisco 9865HDC that was failing. I originally had the Arris DCX3600 the day EDVRs became available in my area. It was a brand new box, never used before. After having it over a year, one day the Arris went completely haywire and started doing some odd things. I replaced it with the Cisco, which was reissued but gave me no problems and it didn’t break my CEC like the Arris did. Fast forward to now, and the Cisco was starting to get problematic. It would constantly freeze up when changing channels, reboot itself at random and the hard drive seemed a little louder than one would hope. That’s why I swapped it out for the 210. If I wanted to go back to a 6 tuner ODN DVR I probably could swing it, just have to give a phone call to my buddy and I’d have one waiting for me behind the front counter of the office I never recorded 6 things at once on my DCX3600M either so it was wasting tuners.

When inputting a channel number and you get the wide window, that is a direct copy of how Dish Network does it on their Hopper DVRs. I’ve known many people with Dish and have become accustomed to this. I found it annoying at first, but don’t mind it anymore. Ironically now most people this people are with Spectrum as they came to the realization that MSG would never come back.

I’ve done the Reset Data in the System Information portion of the menu about a half a dozen time so far, with no improvements. One thing I noticed this afternoon is My Account shows the 210, but it shows as Not Connected with a red dot next to it. I wonder if that indicates anything. I called Tech Support the other day, requesting a box refresh, but the CSR wanted to schedule a truck roll and I declined.

My signal levels are near perfect. I had Gig installed a few days before I got the 210 and everything was where it should be.

Many thanks to Motorola870 for providing some insight on how the Spectrum Guide works under the covers. I don't understand the need for everything these days to be cloud based. I don't even like the term cloud, it's just a fancy marketing buzz work for accessing data not on your local hard drive or network. Remember that free Yahoo mail account you signed up for in 1997? Yeah, that mail was stored on the Yahoo Cloud.

surprised they let you keep a navigator box. The guide seems kind of stable other than that random error in coding at the headend that puts the box in limited mode. I really am not at a loss as my house had a mix of 2010 DCX boxes 3400 non-M and a DCX3200p1 and a DCX3600M I mean it was time to get rid of the iGuide boxes which Spectrum guide is a step up from but a step down from navigator.

Motorola,

I feel bad for your market and tech telling you that you could not combine Navigator/New Spectrum Guides. That is unfortunate if true. Customers really should have a choice of boxes and guides! This includes new and existing customers. Adding or removing a World Box/New Spectrum Guide to an account should be the same as adding or removing an Arris/Samsung/Cisco/Technicolor with Navigator or I-Guide on it. Or even an old SA model box being updated

But to treat the World Box like it's some magical pixie dust that more customers feel cursed with than blessed with and the tech saying, "Oh no, you can't go back." I would accept a statement like that IF all the existing boxes that ran I-Guide or Navigator had the new Spectrum Guide on them. But that sounds like a long time away, especially, and thankfully that Navigator ODN 8.1 has been released. But until that time, customers should have the right to choose the box(es) and guides that they like the best.

Satch

Spectrum guide is coded to account and they couldn't pull the enhanced DVR out of the return to warehouse in the system because dispatch started yanking old boxes off account before they could be told not to remove it. Going forward new customers or trouble calls will get world box. Going and swapping boxes will still get iGuide or navigator.

Be prepared anyone with a ODN box or world box with navigator are first in line for transition to spectrum guide in the next 12 to 18 months.
Techie01 posted : So a tip for the vod portal, an easy way to toggle the different areas without having to go back to the menu is just keep hitting the vod button on the remote, it should go to the next category like video store or movies.

With the new guide, it's cloud based so the full guide isn't actually stored on those boxes anymore so vod isn't a 'channel' anymore so to speak like the iguide system was which is why you have to exit it instead of just changing the channel.

Also your SD channels shouldn't be stretched out, you should be getting an HD picture on the SD numbers. I'd suggest making sure your HD auto tune is on unless you shut that off for a reason. It's under settings and support > preferences > guide settings and then autotune to HD.

Also for authorization and sometimes lag issues, you can go to settings and support > account overview > equipment info > select reset data. It should kick you to the My Library screen and then see if that may have fixed the problem. This may correct your issue with the guide showing channels you aren't subscribed to if you have it filtered to 'my channels'. However if the latency continues, let customer service know. If the signal levels appear to be good on the agents end, they should be submitting a remedy ticket for the latency problem.

Also sometimes the issues can be resolved by rebooting the box completely instead of doing the reset button on the front also so if that doesn't help, unplug it instead.

Also they have to put the front clock display option because people with the motorola/pace boxes can use that feature if they have SG. They're not going to change that just because some boxes don't have the display built in. It would be to much of a headache to create two different versions I would think.

I also posted twice in the Phone section of the Forums about how VoiceZone needs a major overhaul in regards to call blocking, call filtering and anti-spam, but that was deleted almost immediately as well.

Anyhow, I swapped out my old Cisco Enhanced DVR for a Spectrum 210 last week Saturday at a Rochester, NY area Spectrum Cable Store.

1)	It’s been a week, it’s been multiple reboots and Caller ID TV is still not displaying. Even if it was, I have yet to find a place for CID on TV history.

2)	Only four of the twelve series I have set to record so far list the title in the Series Priority screen. Most just say (Title Unavailable). Programming that shows that way still continues to record, so I should be grateful I guess.

3)	There’s no DVR Compensation setting, so when FFWing through commercials you have to manually jump back to catch the first few seconds of the show coming out of break.

4)	A good 70-80% of the time when accessing the guide, when I press Info or OK on the remote, I get a guide not available error, but it brings up the mini guide. I had to set up a few recordings using the mini guide, because the main guide kept erroring out

5)	The channel banner is too small, and the font is too large. Movies and TV shows with longer titles don’t fully display.

6)	Purely cosmetic, but the tiny channel logo in the banner is so small, it’s useless having it there. Some of the graphics are poorer quality, and if you didn’t know what it was supposed to be you can’t even really make out.

7)	In the guide, in addition to the channel logo, about a dozen channels have channel abbreviations. Again, purely cosmetic but inconsistent.

8)	Channels such as MGM, the LA area RSNs and a few other channels that are in L-TWC packages only are listed in the guide and give a ‘Please subscribe’ message when channel surfing. Being on SPP, there is no way for me to subscribe to these channels even if I wanted them, so why can’t they automatically be removed like in Navigator.

9)	One of the biggest annoyances, if you land on an On Demand channel, you have a fraction of a second to channel the channel, otherwise the CH +/- buttons on the remote turn into navigational buttons to navigate On Demand selections. The only way that I’ve figured out how to circumvent this is to use the - button in between the channel buttons to take me back to a previous channel. There are directional buttons that can be used for the same functionality, so why the CH +/- buttons do this as well its anyone’s guess.

10)	On Demand is painfully slow most of the time

11)	The Netflix app was okay at first, now I can’t get any audio out of it, even though my A/V Receiver is detecting a 5.1 signal.

It boggles my mind that this was released to the general public. Or better yet, that it was released first to new customers only. What a way to scare them off. I’m generally more forgiving then most when it comes to things not working as they should when it comes to technology but this really should be in beta still. It’s also extremely disappointing that I apparently cannot post this on Spectrum's own website.

Just to clarify, This is the new Spectrum Guide on the World Box. If so, these are the best examples of why this Guide was not ready for prime time. It sounds like the box is bad, I would go back to the store and ask for a box with Navigator loaded on it. It sounds like all the World Boxes in your New York area have the new Spectrum Guide on them.

I can't really find anything in your post that would be a TOS violation as to why your post was deleted over at the Spectrum Community Forums. I am a power user over there, but not a moderator, I find some of the mods to be better than others.

Best guess for the deletion was that it was deleted by the same mod who sees this post as a rant and a complaint against the company so they removed it. Problem is, I think that your points are justified with regard to the box issues,

This is not to suggest that The Spectrum Guide won't get better on the World Box. It's just not ready for Prime Time. You know, instead of going to a store, get a tech out and see what's going on with this. The techs at least in my area are great and they will listen. Ask him to swap out the World Box for an Arris or a Cisco. Those boxes are great and they have been put through there paces. Just don't have him install an SA-model!

Satch

Satch he is not lying his box is not bad the on demand channel portal locks down the box and you have to hit exit leave it there is no changing up and down. Also once you go world box there is no going back and no mix and match of legacy boxes. The only time you will be able to mix and match is when Navigator and iGuide switch to Spectrum guide.

The On Demand portal is IP based it switches from a local stored version of the guide and it looks onto a webpage and it does the same when doing full info on a show. They seemed to forget that people want to be able to tune out of on demand. Also they moved PPV and Movies On Demand into to quick menu there is no one portal for all On Demand not to mention content entitlements are not the same on these boxes as in some shows will not play due to Netflix? I don't know but it is crap.

I haven't had the guide lock up in a week or so and the last change was the boxes reset due to CMTS being upgraded to 31 downstream bonding and OFDM along with 4 upstream channels and the boxes reset due to the modems in the box going offline.

Also Netflix has improved since they added 271Mbps or thereabouts capacity

With this current version of Spectrum Guide,

How do you leave an On Demand Channel? Can you just enter the numbers for the next channel that you want to watch? What about the Last Channel button?

Looks like the Texas market may have squashed a few more bugs than the New York market with the New Spectrum Guide. I guess I just don't understand the "You can't go back to an older box, once you have the World Box and Spectrum Guide." So if I have World Box with Spectrum Guide, I am stuck with it for as long as I have Spectrum cable?

Satch

What should he do with these problems? What changes preventing the go back? This is terrible, and if the reboots and conditions are not improved, I cannot see how Cable TV customers with Spectrum will put up with this.

Satch

It is all app based and it won't let you find it via on demand. Charter is ass backwards they have 3 VOD portals: TV Shows, Movies, Video Store

There is no compatibility with Netflix in the VOD servers which is all app based and you login in to it like Roku etc.

»www.google.com/url?sa=i& ··· 37189556

I wish the guide would like this instead of the ugly blue that they have. The mini guide looks like this in the picture but not main guide.

they need to add Start Over to Spectrum guide as well. They have some crappy feature where it pops up saying to view from beginning but it is only shows your recording.

They did say cloud DVR is coming in the fall/winter months even the techs that installed the boxes said it is coming I am guessing they may be waiting to launch start over with the cloud integration?

the guide is 75% of what it should be. Also these boxes could support 6 tuners via software upgrade Charter is lazy on it.

They are basically a cheaper version of the ARRIS DCX3600M and Cisco 9865HDC without cablecard and 16x4 modem that uses 8x4 for DOCSIS for netflix and two-way communications and 4 tuners off of it for QAM TV tuning. also it has 2GB memory instead of 1GB.

at least these boxes are running it via DSG the original Spectrum guide rollout used legacy OOB for Cisco headend in Fort Worth Texas.

The guide is about 75% ready for mass rollout they need to add:
-timed reminders for shows
-fix Native output on HDMI (allow it instead of defaulting to one output)
-fix stretching on SD channels which are black barred no matter what you do
-Remove features that aren't even needed on these boxes as why do I need to have a front clock display option in the menu if you aren't going to put one in the box.
-make a central VOD portal and stop trying to make it hectic by only allowing PPV and Movies to be accessed via quick menu
-add start over feature
-change the font of the main guide to that of the mini guide
-sync logos in mini guide with main guide
-properly input sub entitlements in VOD and in main guide
-allow you to only show subscribed channels (and not falsely put channels that aren't in your package in the current subscribed only filter)
-do not mix watchlist between boxes unless you allow multiroom DVR. Kinda dumb to have mom and dad
s watch list on a child's box and it shows the tittles for all boxes in the watchlist
-fix the channel input I don't need 3 inch wide input numbers on screen when changing a channel
-fix the locking of the guide when viewing on demand, netflix, or even viewing more info about a show
-the remote is crap. I want a remote with central VOD portal and you put time to have back light on menu buttons but not channels numbers wtf really lmao.
