The disqualifiers are bad credit ie: bankruptcy, unpaid bills, charge offs, high balances...

All meaning you can't be "responsible." Can't live on the salary provided, etc.. Again, not my judgement, higher ups. Thats their view.

Verizon Wireless it seems to be the luck of the draw if you have bad credit. I have seen people with bad get approved with device financing, no deposit, in addition I have seen people get denied device financing and requires a deposit to open account with bad credit.

Except that there are SOME people who pay cash for everything. Yes, I realize that's a dwindling number. My late dad paid cash for cars and their homes (yes, they were nice mid 6-figure homes). He paid through both nostrils on auto/home insurance simply because of no established credit history. Product of the Great Depression and he refused to have any credit.

I've known people with so-called great credit scores who are disasters on the road with multiple at fault accidents yet skate off with low rates. Just my 1.5 cents worth. Cheers.

Actually you still need established credit file to get other items not normally plunked down on cash. A home, a car (yes some folks save up to pay total amount), services like gas and electric and cable and telephone service. You must have sufficient credit to be able to “pay cash” just because I pay in full every month doesn’t mean others can or do.

I like the points like the other poster stated, and since I could just as easy use my bank atm card for purchases and payments the use and payment history makes for a great credit file.

Which once again, says how broken the system is.

I have several Credit Cards, and use one as everyday spending, it gets paid in full the day i'm paid... BUT up until four years ago I had never had a CC, or a loan for that matter.

I bought my car, and to get the 0% financing (I had the cash, but the officer at my CU brought up the idea, as my checking account there pays 4%).. BUT i had to open a "secured" credit card, charge $1,500 to it, and pay it off right away, so they had some payment history to offer me the loan.

In the end I came out better, paid the car off in less than 36mos and got 4% on my checking account in the meantime, but it's still a jacked up system.

actually, credit cards are quite beneficial for people who do pay them in full every month:
1) If you pay the entire statement balance on payment due date, you don't incur any interest charges. Many cards also don't have an annual fee (I won't touch a card that has annual fees)
2) Most cards offer some kind of points than can be redeemed for cash (i.e. applied to your statement balance)
3) Credit cards frequently offer additional protections against damaged purchases, rental car insurance and even travel insurance.

Try getting those benefits with cash.

Then again, if you don't pay the balance in full every month ... credit cards are the worst idea. It all depends upon the holder.

They are not B.S. If you had a divorce or other life event that hurt your score you can put a note on you report. Unpaid medical expenses don't hurt as much as not paying regular bills.

In New Jersey the deposit has to be in an interest bearing account and the interest is yours if you pay your bills.

My home and auto insurer ran my credit, they just checked the FICO score. It was a soft check and doesn't show on credit reports. Credit checks both soft and hard are becoming more common. My score is over 800 and I get a great rate. A credit score shows how responsible one is.

Or like when I started where I am now, coming out of being laid off 3x by american companies outsourcing my just out of college jobs.. Had late student loan payments, had no insurance and an incident and 300k in medical bills, etc..

Now i just work a good union job.. everything has been paid/negotiated (the medical debt), and my credit score is 689.

Employers who judge on that are idiotic and depict what's wrong with society.. Shit happens, give people a chance and they'll usually deal with it.

That is not the way higher ups see it. Not my call. That is the procedure, its been that way for decades. Even for the non sworn positions.

Your choice to refuse, and we have had a few. They were promptly put on the no pile, and then put on NON HIREABLE pile forever! No need to bother to reapply ever again. We don't consider them.

Since the initial application is all computerized via the internet (regardless of our luddite friend here) they get flagged, and PLIP! Off into the ethos they go!

For the field I work its SOP, has been for 20+ years. Plenty of recruits denied jobs due to it.

The higher up consider a representation of responsibility.

I just have to deal with the FTO side, those decisions and choices are above my pay grade.

They shouldn't need to run your credit unless you are financing a device, but the carriers try to force you to run credit anyway so that they can then sell you phone upgrades later to try and lock you in. If you push hard enough, you should be able to get service without a credit check as long as you pay full price for the phone.

also for the best experience make sure to go to a corporate store, not an "authorized retailer"
