Re: the "EFI virus". What cause it? How to recover from it?

When installing a dual boot situation, GRUB will get installed on the Windows disk/partition by default, which usually doesn't cause problems. However it can get changed/corrupted so you have problems. That's why we disconnect the Windows drive when we install Linux. You can tell the installer to install GRUB on the Linux disk/partition too, which is what I do.

At what point in the install process can you tell the installer where to install Grub?

Is it a box you check or do you need to insert a command or address to the Linux partition? if so, what is the command text to use?

This is very much distribution specific. Which one are you using? Most will recognize how the system is booted EFI vs. Std. BIOS and install correctly. Not sure about dual booting as my systems are single purposed.

It's usually in early stages of the install, when you select partitioning. Typically you have to select "Advanced" in that step and adjust grub as needed.
That said, grub can be re-installed at any time later from the linux system itself or bootable linux cd/usb.

Would you elaborate on how to reinstall Grub to the Linux hard drive and remove it from the Windows hard drive (in a dual boot situation?

For example, does reinstalling grub to a different location remove it from the location in which it was originally installed?

These questions apply to Linux Mint v.19 with Mate DE.
