I think they simply realize it if they want their upcoming original TV content to succeed on a much wider scale, it can't be locked down to their own hardware only. I expect it to show up on more Smart TV platforms.
Just like the iPod didn't get massively popular until Windows support was added.
I see the potential upside to this move. The Smart TV simply becomes an agnostic platform with which to propagate Apple Media.
One would think this would or could cannibalizes Apple TV sales if it goes beyond Samsung and moves on to other manufacturers. Samsung is likely one of the most popular though so no surprise that Apple would start there.
Now you have to wonder if Apple would allow future support for the HomePod? I mean, how far do they take this thing,....?
Not sure I get your anology with support for the HomePod? Really, they are already doing the software thing similarly with Apple Music being available on Alexa now.
You can now listen to Apple Music on Amazon's Echo so this doesn't really surprise me. Like others have said, to make these services viable you can't have it available just on Apple hardware.

Android too right? It took me a while to realize this. I am loyal to Spotify though.
With all of the talk about how Apple's revenue/profit is down it is clear that Apple has to change something. Their proprietary and walled garden has to open up a bit where they can potentially make money selling their services. Regardless of the amount of money APple has, they can't make every single product like TVs, refrigerators, etc. Apple has played it safe for too long at this point. Look at Microsoft. They have given up on Windows Mobile and they have licensed a lot of their software to play nice with Windows 10 and Android. Microsoft isn't trying to lay claim to any specific market any longer. Say what you want about Microsoft, by Windows and Office are still king.
