Battery for Pace 5268AC Gateway?

Does anyone know if at&t will give me a battery for the Pace 5268AC Gateway if I ask for it?

I have VoIP service in addition to Internet service.

You're probably better off plugging it into a good UPS.

That is a good point.

They will not give you one. It's not considered a "carrier grade" phone solution by FCC standards, and therefore have to give no guarantee as to availability. If you are worried about it, you could buy a battery for it yourself.... but as another post above mentions, it's probably better to invest in a UPS, and possibly add your router (if you use your own) to said UPS as well.

They used to do this, but no longer do so. Somewhat amazingly, you can still buy the same Belkin DC UPS for it on amazon if you really want. »smile.amazon.com/Belkin- ··· 04RRFY5I (I already have one, by the way.)

With my original 3800HGV-B (?), circa 2009, T supplied a Belkin unit, so the RG supported VOIP and broadband when utility power had dropped. This was a failover mode that I liked, since I didn’t have to revert to cellular mode on my iPad.

As I recall, with the 5268AC, its firmware only provides VOIP, if utility power is lost and a backup battery is present. If one wants the RG to provide more than VOIP, the battery isn’t a good fit.

The reason they no longer issue batteries is because the telecom companies and cable companies lobbied to the FCC that the service they office isn't the same as POTS service and therefore should not be part of any 911 related regulations, etc, etc... so they decided that it's not a "carrier grade" voice solution, and now 911 service is up to the user by ensuring their address is properly listed in their account with e-911, and that their phone system has a battery backup that works.

I cancelled all my land line based phone services altogether, we just have 2 cell phones, and we use WhatsApp for international calls to my family members.

I have a battery for that Gateway if you want it, I upgraded to a BGW-210-700. I ended up going with the APC they link to that plugs inline to the wall wart to provide battery backup.

It is more efficient at powering the modem because it providers DC power directly to it, rather than inverting and transforming low voltage DC to 120VAC which is then stepped down and rectified back to 12VDC. If you're on fiber you'd still need another separate power source for the ONT, though.

If the power draw was low enough you could potentially create a custom cable to connect to the ont as well though couldn't you?

If it uses the same voltage, sure.

We have a lot of outages here, so I have a pretty good one. It runs the ONT, BGW210, a couple dumb switches and a satellite TV receiver. It may seem like overkill, but it'll last for hours and it has a Mute setting to eliminate the infernal beeping that some of them make.
