it's going to depend on the airport but someone I know regularly fly's SJC to one or the other LA airports and sees it as a 2+ hour trip from dropoff to the uber at the other end. actall flight time is 1:20 on a good day
for years she used to drive it mountain view to riverside was 5-XXX hours(occasional SNOW, forest fires earthquakes and rush hours adding to a longer day)

A non-stop train could do it in 4 hours, but stations and areas with poor grade separation (LA area and SJC into SF) stretch that out quite a bit,

That's impossible when you have to show up 90 minutes ahead of time for security. The TSA has helped trains out at least where they exist, like BOS-WAS.

small airports don't have that requirement , SJC has a Kiss and go(not recommended with uber ) lane and straight in to a carryon only TSA check. if you know your flight check you can be in the air in 20-30 minutes

Next week Alaska air begins flights from Paine Field (PAE)(home of Boeing 747 757 767 777 and 787 manufacturing) in a little 2 gate terminal designed for drop off and go intended to be sub 15-30 minutes (only 18 flights a day)
the flight time is +15 minutes do to plane, (later it will become all 737) as Sea-tac but it only 12 miles to get there vs 38 each way to SEA across one of the worst commutes in the country, the quick check in and short taxi time should make this a much more pleasant trip to SJC (a place we go regularly)
not all airports are the same, SFO (also available) is worse connections to the south bay, and at times a nightmare to escape but much better to SF itself via BART

I've seen smaller airports take an hour to do TSA. When TSA is functional and competent, it doesn't take more than 5 minutes at any airport, but either of those two things can easily go down the drain with TSA and you're looking at an hour.
