gr8sho posted : I would say your observations are spot on. None of the WiFi sections in att gateways are good enough to drive anything but a small set of devices. Forget about WiFi calling.

maartena posted :
<said>said by Anon19d98 :</said>
Is it just me or my gateway or is the wireless on the NVG599 terrible? The band steering doesn't seem to work correctly. With both the 2.4 and 5 GHz networks enabled I would get constant pauses and disconnects. Once I disabled the 5 GHz network that issue went away but of course I can't get anywhere near the full speed of my gigabit service even with AC devices. I did try to disable the 2.4 GHz network and only use the 5 GHz but I was still getting pauses and disconnects. Can anyone chime in?

5 Ghz networks have higher speeds, but MUCH lower distance. It's likely your devices are losing 5 Ghz signal, reconnecting to 2.4 Ghz, then finding better 5 Ghz signal again, etc....

Also, you have to realize that wifi is not going to get you anywhere near 1 Gbit/s. If you want Gigabit speeds, go wired.

If you are looking to improve the wireless speeds overall, don't use the gateway. Disable the wifi on the gateway, and have multiple access points connected by wires throughout the house. If running wires isn't an option, invest in a Mesh Network kit, such as this one: »www.amazon.com/Google-Wi ··· 1MAW2294

The mesh networking kit are a fairly affordable way (and easier to implement then having to run wires) to make sure you have wifi signal throughout the house. Only downside is that you have to place them on the right spots, so depending on the house you might end up with one on the wall in the hall to "bridge" to the other side of the house.....

gadawg posted : The 5 ghz network doesn’t have the range 2.4 has. So you will lose 5g connection easily. Best bet is get a wireless router and either set up ip passthrough or use as an access point. In general, the gateways don’t have great WiFi anyway. Most isp’s combo modem/wireless routers don’t either.
