Re: [Serious] Are all hospitals in Quebec this bad?said by olic:said by jaysona: I have a sneaking suspicion that history will be repeating itself, because, well, Quebec. Wow, it's pitiful that this kind of xenophobic comment is acceptable in Canada in 2019. Say the same thing about blacks, natives, LGBTQ+, muslims, Jews ... But, English Canada accepts xenophobia against Quebecers, worse, it values it. This country is a shame. Oh my. I live in New Jersey. We have a lot of Mafia here, hence the TV series "The Sopranos" which you may have heard of. A lot of people also make fun of our scenery, even though they only see what's along the NJ Turnpike and miss all of the beauty. But when other people say that NJ is "Full of mob guys!" or "Best known for the refineries!" we don't yell "Xenophobia! Xenophobia!" ----- The city of Chicago and the state of Illinois are also massively corrupt, going back almost a century with the gangster Al Capone. But people can discuss it without yelling "Xenophobia!" ----- And the Washington Post, which hardly has a grudge against Quebec, notes: It is considered incredibly bad form to point out that Quebec is home to a lot of corrupt businesses, and that the corruption of these businesses is often deeply interconnected with the politicians who support and subsidize them.
In 2010, Maclean’s published a cover story making a persuasive case that Quebec was “the most corrupt province in Canada” and was shortly thereafter denounced by a unanimous vote in the federal Parliament. Canadian politicians are supposed to regard it as self-evident that Canada’s French province has a right to be wealthy and successful by any means necessary. » www.washingtonpost.com/o ··· olitics/It is what it is, trying to deny it helps no one and just looks absurd. |

If at all times the other states were talking about you, it was to say negative things, without ever proving anything except using : ",because, well, NJ" maybe you would be more offended. |

Mind you, while that sense is quite prevalent and it causes me to face-palm many times, it does has its upside - for those of that have a "pure laine" Québecois last name. The ease at which some of us can conduct business and financial exploitation of those insecurities here is stupidly simple and borders on the insane - so many lulz. |

No. Because there’s no collective victimhood in NJ. They have goombahs and dumpy cities like Newark and lots of other places too. They just don’t whine about it being that way. Reality is reality. |

But we're not. We get on with life. ----- Ever since colonial times, NJ has felt ignored because of being overshadowed by its two neighbors NYC and Philadelphia. Even Ben Franklin commented on that. If [some] people in Quebec define themselves by saying "we're not Canadians", and if a major theme of Canada is people saying "we're not Americans!", then a major part of New Jersey identity is saying "we're not New Yorkers!". And we laugh about it. It's why so many comedians have come from New Jersey, back to Abbott and Costello, Ernie Kovacs, Danny DeVito, etc. |

I will say it one last time. It's the wording that was offensive and the repetition. We are not afraid of criticism and expose our problems. But there are limits to exaggeration and how to do it. Right now, in Canada, it's clearly a xenophobic climate. |
