Because if one failed to catch a malware the other one is always there.<br><br>I dont have confidence having only Windows Defender alone on my system  :)]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Davesnothere posted : <div class="bquote"><said>said by <a href="/profile/1640595" onClick="this.blur(); return popup(event,'/uidpop?ajh=1&uid=1640595');">Eagles1221</a>:</said><p>It's possible rather than maintain 2 definitions updates, MSE simply skips over the malware bits.<br><br>We're large enough [that] we have a dedicated MS rep, and she is insistent that MSE is not a full malware/security package.<br><br>Defender plus MSE on 7, or Defender on 8 and higher, IS [a full malware/security package].<br></p></div> <br>She didn't write the program.<br><br>She could be mistaken.<br><br>Still, anything is theoretically possible.<br><br>But if a person was to follow the same logic as you have just raised about having an app skip the definitions components for which it has no interest/functionality, then I must rebut as next below :<br><br>Inside each of the manual definitions executables offered by MS, there are some files.<br><br>The flavour intended for Windows Defender for Windows 7 and Vista (and XP, for that matter) completely leaves out the definitions components which are for the virus recognition, as that version of WD is well-known not to deal with viruses.<br><br>But the Anti-Malware components inside of it are IDENTICAL in sizes and hash codes to those within the larger file intended for MSE and the newer flavour of WD of Win 8/10.<br><br>I have extracted the relevant files from each, and done these comparisons, as recently as yesterday evening.<br><br>If they were to do what you are suggesting, MS could just have ONE updater for ALL of their flavours of MSE and WD, and let each app access however many of the definition components that it needs.<br><br>Yet they still go to the bother of writing the smaller updater for the older flavour of WD.<br><br>Based upon that, I submit that each and every one of these apps uses ALL of the definitions with which it is provided, and have seen no clear statement from MS to the contrary.<br><br>Plus, IIRC, if you install MSE into Windows 7 and Vista (and XP, for that matter), it disables the existing WD app from running.<br><br>Why would it do that, if it was not going to duplicate the function which WD provides to those versions of Windows ? - It would not make sense.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[DonoftheDead posted : Defender has been real good for a awhile now, but it's got the highest false/positives too. It's just fine for my use but KAV closes the backdoors in Windows and has high scores and fewer f/p's so I think it's better, especially from a privacy viewpoint. I generally tell folks if they want to spend money on an AV to get KAV. I'm sure the MS rep is right when she says MSE is not as comprehensive as Defender. If you want complete protection on W7 you gotta pay for it.]]></description>

This should catch 99%+ of any threats.<br><br>But with my personal computing hygiene and habits, I've never had a virus or infection in 30+ years. :-)<br></p></div> <br>I did not know about the DSLR issue.<br><br>And I do occasionally use the Malwarebytes app too.<br><br>But a lot of my good fortune in avoiding pests is by not taking very many chances online, and using an ad blocker extension in my browsers.<br><br>Ads are often hosted on alternate domains, which could become compromised, so by blocking ads, you also reduce such risks.<br><br>And recently, I began using the extensions RequestPolicy and uMatrix, which further limit/control whatever alternate domains can be crosslinked and loaded in the background by a domain which you choose to visit.<br><br>This means that if one of the crosslinked domains is compromised, or if a hacker hacks the main domain and explicitly inserts a crosslink to an additional compromised domain, that any such domains will be rejected by default and will not load.<br><br>Personally, I had more virus problems in the days BEFORE the Internet, when they got around on diskettes.]]></description>

If you use Internet explorer 11 with "Smart filter" enabled you get also some short of Web shield.<br><br>You can trigger MSE update using Task scheduler  (I have it at 1 min after I boot and internet connection is established  and after that once every half an hour)<br><br>You can combine it with PC Tools Firewall Plus  v 7.0.0.123  and Malwarebytes (I have lifetime)  <br><br>All these three (MSE+Malwarebytes+ PC Tools Firewall plus) will ensure you a solid protection.<br><br>PS: If you do not want to pay for Malwarebytes, you can install only the Antiransomware , which is free and offers real time .protection]]></description>

My customers use paid the version of Malwarebytes and limited user privileges. <br><br>I occasionally check out logs in my ASUS router and use its AI protection and notification as well as the usual browser and application configurations. I've seen many blocks in logs, but it's been years since I had anything in the way of malware or viruses. Windows is like swiss cheese multiple CVE and holes every month they have to patch. When running an executable file , Defender or whatever antivirus I use will scan that particular.exe, not Smart Screen.<br><br>If you use Edge, Smart Screen is the equivalent of Web Shield commonly found in most antiviruses.<br><br>If you use another browser (Firefox for example) ,Smart Screen is not active when you download something.<br><br>Correct me if I am wrong, please!]]></description>

I find the more current version a bit more obtrusive with popups every now and again but not so much that I've uninstalled it--I do think a custom install with careful selection of which components are useful makes a difference with respect to the free version's popups.<br><br><br>For antimalware, I use Malwarebytes antimalware (verson 1.75 as I don't care for the current version's interface). I use ZoneAlarm Free (version 9.2.106.000, one of the last versions prior to software bloat) which I like because it allows me to see and control both incoming and outgoing online access requests...<br><br><br>]]></description>
