Yup, Microsoft Defender is not only the king of false positives, but it is probably the most CPU heavy Av program out there.

Also, Windows Smart Screen has privacy issues as it sends back URL's you visit unencrypted and unobfusicated. It also sends back the SID(Security Idetifier) associated with your account back to Microsoft.

Still, anything is theoretically possible.

But if a person was to follow the same logic as you have just raised about having an app skip the definitions components for which it has no interest/functionality, then I must rebut as next below :

Inside each of the manual definitions executables offered by MS, there are some files.

The flavour intended for Windows Defender for Windows 7 and Vista (and XP, for that matter) completely leaves out the definitions components which are for the virus recognition, as that version of WD is well-known not to deal with viruses.

But the Anti-Malware components inside of it are IDENTICAL in sizes and hash codes to those within the larger file intended for MSE and the newer flavour of WD of Win 8/10.

I have extracted the relevant files from each, and done these comparisons, as recently as yesterday evening.

If they were to do what you are suggesting, MS could just have ONE updater for ALL of their flavours of MSE and WD, and let each app access however many of the definition components that it needs.

Yet they still go to the bother of writing the smaller updater for the older flavour of WD.

Based upon that, I submit that each and every one of these apps uses ALL of the definitions with which it is provided, and have seen no clear statement from MS to the contrary.

Plus, IIRC, if you install MSE into Windows 7 and Vista (and XP, for that matter), it disables the existing WD app from running.

I did not know about the DSLR issue.

And I do occasionally use the Malwarebytes app too.

But a lot of my good fortune in avoiding pests is by not taking very many chances online, and using an ad blocker extension in my browsers.

Ads are often hosted on alternate domains, which could become compromised, so by blocking ads, you also reduce such risks.

And recently, I began using the extensions RequestPolicy and uMatrix, which further limit/control whatever alternate domains can be crosslinked and loaded in the background by a domain which you choose to visit.

This means that if one of the crosslinked domains is compromised, or if a hacker hacks the main domain and explicitly inserts a crosslink to an additional compromised domain, that any such domains will be rejected by default and will not load.

MSE will NOT install onto Win 8.

MSE is MORE than antivirus, and if you try to install MSE onto Win 8+, you will be refused, with a message stating that the already present Windows Defender offers the the same or better protection.

MSE on Win 7 and earlier uses THE SAME IDENTICAL DEFINITIONS FILE as Win Defender on Win 8 and newer Windows does.

Therefore, each looks BOTH at viruses and malware.

Win Defender on Win 7 and earlier is the only scenario where something is missing, and that is the antivirus protection.

MSE is a full antivirus and will run on Win 7 , and Win 8. If you use Internet explorer 11 with "Smart filter" enabled you get also some short of Web shield.

You can trigger MSE update using Task scheduler (I have it at 1 min after I boot and internet connection is established and after that once every half an hour)

You can combine it with PC Tools Firewall Plus v 7.0.0.123 and Malwarebytes (I have lifetime)

All these three (MSE+Malwarebytes+ PC Tools Firewall plus) will ensure you a solid protection.

I occasionally check out logs in my ASUS router and use its AI protection and notification as well as the usual browser and application configurations. I've seen many blocks in logs, but it's been years since I had anything in the way of malware or viruses. (*knocks on wood* :) ).

A brief Google and MSI search shows that MSE has detection for the Trickbot malware.

Go to the page at MS where you can download each of the offline updater executables, and download each one.

Then compare them, their byte counts, hashes, and their internal files (the defs installers are just executable ZIP archives, which I opened with WinRAR or similar).

Last time I did this, the file for updating the defs of MSE for Win 7 was IDENTICAL to the file for updating Defender's defs on newer Windows versions.

So unless the app ignores some of the defs in the file, then the general functionality of any apps which use the same defs ought to be the same.

Furthermore, The new Trickbot trojan specifically attacks Windows Defender and in many cases is able evade detection, and in many cases even disable defender completely despite tamper protection being on, just like Windows Resource Protection doesn't stop malware from modifying key windows files.

Why would I trust Microsoft with my security? Windows is like swiss cheese multiple CVE and holes every month they have to patch. What do you mean by that? When running an executable file , Defender or whatever antivirus I use will scan that particular.exe, not Smart Screen.

If you use Edge, Smart Screen is the equivalent of Web Shield commonly found in most antiviruses.

If you use another browser (Firefox for example) ,Smart Screen is not active when you download something.

A program called "Defender" is included with Win7 and protects against malware only. On Win 7 MSE replaces Defender and adds virus protection.

It is a common misconception that MSE does not protect against malware. MSE indeed protects against many types of malware, even including PUPs.

MSE was renamed Windows Defender starting in Windows 8.

On my main Win7(sp1/pro/64bit) desktop system, I use Avast Free version 7.0.1474 (older version, still supported, still getting a/v signature files updates) custom installed with only the File Shield, Web Shield, Network Shield and Behavior Shield installed (more current versions have consolidated some of the older version shields) and none of the other Avast Free components. I also have a more current version (18.5.2342), again, custom installed with only the File, Web, Behavior Shields only--no other components installed) on the laptop (also win7) I use as a testbed/backup.

I find Avast Free version 7.0.1474 unobtrusive and would recommend it (see: »www.oldapps.com/avast_an ··· ast=8431 ). I find the more current version a bit more obtrusive with popups every now and again but not so much that I've uninstalled it--I do think a custom install with careful selection of which components are useful makes a difference with respect to the free version's popups.


For antimalware, I use Malwarebytes antimalware (verson 1.75 as I don't care for the current version's interface). I use ZoneAlarm Free (version 9.2.106.000, one of the last versions prior to software bloat) which I like because it allows me to see and control both incoming and outgoing online access requests...
