Re: [AZ] Cox Raising Ultimate Download Speed in October

said by CoxJimR:

Good Morning everyone. Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions on how you might see the plans changing. Instead of trying to do back and forth on particular points, let me cover the topics more broadly, particularly for those who may not have seen other threads.

We use Data Usage as one of the tools to manage the network, in fact more ISP's have some sort of data usage plan than don't. I can't speak to why some ISP's do what they do, I don't work there so it would be speculation. It's not due to a weakness in our network, in fact I think our network is in one of the best places ever with the addition of DOCSIS 3.1, but it is one tool of many we use to help balance things out, manage expectations on people who run 20TB TOR servers and the like. We're investing $2 Billion a year in the network, and will continue to do that.

The opinions that 1 TB is a small amount for most users are not based in fact. The median user uses about 300 GB per month based on the public information I have seen. Usage over 1 TB is a very small universe. I also understand that many in THIS particular group uses more than average, but that's not the case typically. The opinion that "all data should be included" is not one that most customers have either, I think I have touched on this before.

As I mentioned before, most Internet customers last year (Preferred and Ultimate are 2 of our most popular tiers) did not get a price increase, and some Preferred customers had a price decrease. I don't think it's factually correct to say our basic prices are going up, and we are taking on data usage in the majority of the cases. Your personal experience may vary.

I noticed some people made a cost per MB analysis. We don't look at that today, but we have heard some suggestions on "per bit" pricing that could be interesting.

I'm sure this won't be the last time this topic comes up, I always learn something from the feedback so thanks.

I have asked twice in this thread already, but can anyone from Cox give me a good reason why my data cap was LOWERED from 2TB to 1TB? No other explanation rather than a money grab. And if an ISP I'm paying $100/month can't provide 2TB of data over the course of a month then there is something seriously wrong.

gworkman7 hit the nail on the head IMO. That would allow people to dump their cable and go to another cable streaming service and Cox couldn't hold them hostage any more!

When we broadly launched data usage we made a decision to make caps flat across all tiers so we standardized at 1 TB.

Funny how Cox didn't standardize around the claimed 300GB median. 500GB cap should be plenty. People over 500GB is a very small universe.

Jim, This is what I have to post in some forums. It is pretty sad. I used to be in that 300GB crowd. Now - for some unknown reason - I used ~ 600GB/mo.

My Internet patterns have not changed but my usage has. Curious isn’t it?

PS Vue has some of the locals here in the Valley. I still watch the all locals + others on my OTA rig. Why? Cox has a 1TB cap on the Internet. If I used PS Vue - or any streaming Internet source - because I will bust the cap & pay a “fine”. Now I can give Cox an extra $50/mo for a no cap Internet.

I don't know how to answer this. Have you looked at things like cameras?
