Think top down Zelda meets Dark Souls. The gameplay is really reminiscent of the former (except more difficult), and the leveling mechanics are a stripped down version of the latter. If that sounds at all good to you I don't think you can go wrong here.

Unfortunately it's a timed exclusive so no Playstation or Switch play for now.

You probably know this but the subscription stacks, so the one you get with All Access won't start until the one you've already paid ends. I had to grab a month for $1 when I first got my console because it needed some tlc from customer service, so my 2 years didn't start until that month was over.

When I got my Series X it was through the All Access program and thanks to the Gamestop shenanigans upthread I got my order through an hour and a half after they supposedly went live.

Hardware gaming sales for the first half of 2021 totaled $2.3 billion for Hardware (consoles) and $1.2 billion for Accessories - but the brunt of the revenue flows from Content (which includes software sales, DLC, and subscriptions), which brought in some $25.4 billion in revenues in the same timeframe.

I had no idea this was the landscape. I'm thinking maybe I should have bought an XBox instead of the PS5,... :)

It's not like you are one of the ones buying out the stores with bots and then selling them at a marked up price. Personally I'd see if anyone I knew wanted to buy one at retail but if you need (or want) the money you're well within your rights.

My buddy who doesn't follow any of this stuff paid a Series X price for a series S because he got it from Wal-Mart and didn't realize he wasn't buying directly from them but from a different seller through them. He didn't know he was paying the scalper's premium until I told him. But it was for his nephew, who was graduating high school. When I told him he overpaid he cursed a bit but kept the order because he needed it for the party. The kid loved it so while he was bummed he got gouged he doesn't regret it.

I really disliked the game initially. First time playing permadeath. As my skill and understanding grew I began to love the game, eventually became addicted. Invested the longest play time (bout 2yrs) and most hrs of any game. Can’t wait for SOD 3. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I went through the GamePass mobile app last night and added all the games that interest me to the "Play Later" list. There are so many, the app slowed down, lol. Good thing I don't have a bandwidth cap on my home ISP, or I'd be in big trouble.

I installed and finished Gears 5, am actively enjoying Forza 4, and downloaded the entire Halo Master Chief Collection and the Destroy All Humans remake. I started a re-run through all the Halo campaigns last year with GamePass on PC and it's very nice that I can now keep that going on the console without losing any progress. I also checked out No Man's Sky, not very far into that one yet. The Yakuza series is on my list; it's one of those that has always intrigued me but I've never actually played. Now there is zero barrier to entry so I'll try them out. I'm also going to check out the Ori games again (played both on PC, didn't finish either).

RIP my backlog of stuff I intended to get back to some day.

I spent some time browsing the catalog and there's plenty there that I haven't played to keep me busy until Microsoft's big exclusives start landing (for starters, I need to catch up on the Halo franchise before Infinite launches). The fact that you can just install and try games you wouldn't normally spend money on is great for finding new gems.

A couple years back I had GamePass on the PC for a little while, and although the offerings were seriously lacking compared to the console version, it did allow me to discover both Void Bastards and Slay the Spire, so I'm well acquainted with the discovery potential already.

I do have a 120 Hz TV, although it's the cursed Sony X900H that does a crap job of it (it secretly reduces resolution at 120 Hz and can't do both 120 and Dolby Vision at the same time). Having compared 4K/60 vs. 4K/120 in a couple of PS5 games, I've found 4K/60 to be the better overall choice on my particular TV. While I can see the additional frames at 120, it's not significant enough--and the quality loss due to the TV's crummy processing is noticeable enough--that I'll stick with 4k/60. It's still better than the 1440p/60 that I can just squeeze out of my PC's 1070.

Earned the last of the money I needed today to secure the Series X...a day late for yesterday's drop from Walmart and Best Buy; oh well. Sometimes Microsoft's own store makes some units available over the weekend, so I'll keep an eye out.

In the meantime, Borderlands 3 looks pretty great on the PS5, and Wreckfest just came out on PS Plus...

PC builds will always best a console, but the Series X has a lot going for it and if you think about it... $500 is a steal to get a 4k60 system that can also double as a media center (Netflix, Hulu, youtube etc) . If you have a 120Hz TV , some games on the Series X can even hit 120.

I know Destiny 2 has a 120 FPS mode for Crucible matches (game caps at 60 for normal play, but crucible sets the cap to 120) and it runs solid 4k120.

Game Pass is also an absolutely insane deal if you do not own many of the games on it already. It pays for itself every month if you are not shy about trying something out of your normal preferences. Gears 5, Ori, Halo Infinite(eventually), Resident Evil 7, Entire Yakuza collection, Subnautica etc.

Going the All Access route was kind of a pain since I had to make a call to activate it, but I think those are easier to buy since bots can't just snag them all in 5 seconds. I had initially given up that day but got mine an hour and a half after they went live so that may be your best bet if you don't mind the hassle.

There aren't any exclusives yet, but Gears 5 and Forza Horizon 4 both look amazing, both are available on GamePass, and both are really good games IMO.

Thanks for the impressions--sounds like it's an impressive machine and really makes GamePass shine. Now the only trick is finding one, ugh. Thought I was done with that after snagging a PS5...

I called Citizens One (the finance company), gave them my serial # after a transfer, and then had to re-set up my console from scratch. Thankfully I was able to keep the games I had already downloaded. I finished Gears 5 last week (still need to do the story DLC) and have been enjoying Forza Horizon 4, holy cow what a beautiful game. It is what I wanted Dirt 5 to be.

Now I'm just going to pay the whole thing off on my first bill and be done with it.

Because I'm at the edge of the city, I can take the commuter train or the subway. ;)

That being said the commuter train is 3x the price of the Subway, and only runs during rush hour, but it's worth every penny.

That is cool. Assuming regular business travel is re-implemented any time soon I can see myself throwing a controller and a dock into my carryon bag along with the Switch for another option to play stuff on the go.

Assuming it works well on a mobile connection I'm game, most of the testing I've done has been on home Wifi with an FTTH connection, so conditions are pretty optimal... once I'm on a commuter train it might be a different story.

So I got the console through Gamestop, and the only ones they had when I ordered it were the All Access consoles. As I stated in the other thread, All Access wasn't included on the console because GS shipped them before sending the serial numbers to the place that runs the All Access financing, so I had to shell out a trial dollar for Game Pass the first month while I wait on them to catch up.

I bought the console solely for GamePass, and it is a great deal. So far I've downloaded 3 games for my dollar; Forza 4, No Man's Sky and Gears of War 5. I've spent most of my time on Gears 5 so far. When reading up on how Gears 5 is optimized for the XSX, it's claimed that it basically runs on Ultra PC settings and locked in at 4k and 60 fps (there are some 120 Hz options if you have the hardware, I don't). I definitely believe it. I snagged a $500 Samsung 70 inch 4k 60 Hz tv over Black Friday last year, and I'm tickled pink by how Gears looks and plays on that thing. Especially the open world skiff portions, holy cow. Smooth as butter and looks amazing. I just wish they'd have done what Sony did with the enhanced haptic feedback on the controller; I know that would feel really cool gliding over the ice (which PS5 does great when Astro is ice skating in Astro's Playroom). Another cool feature is with Gears they let you choose which portions of the game to download so you're not wasting data. I left out the multiplayer because I've never been a huge Gears multiplayer guy. This may be a standard feature but I'd never run across it before so was happy it was an option.

Of course there are no exclusives yet for the Series X, which sucks, but GamePass takes the sting out of that by a lot when games like Gears and Forza look and play as well as they do on the Series X hardware.

Microsoft hardly changed the interface at all, which I like. 5 or 6 months in with my PS5 and I'm still stumbling over the changes they made to the UI. Old habits are hard to break. Microsoft now has a Playstation Now like feature that allows you to stream games from your console to your phone/tablet and play with a controller. I don't know if I'll ever use that but it's a cool option. Another good thing about GamePass Ultimate is that it includes the console and PC clients, and if you have one of the 'play anywhere' games going you can hop between the platforms while keeping your saves.

Anyway I think I'm set for a while, which the missus will be glad to hear. Next step is upgrading my PC in a few years when (hopefully) the components that will leave these consoles in the dust aren't as wildly expensive as they are at the moment. As it is I am very happy with the setup I have going right now.

So far it's biggest issue has been mapping more complex controls like trackIR. But for KB+Mouse it's been rock solid.
