Re: Prep for Coronavirus

said by hlo207:

Problem is non of these modeling ever come close to reality.

Here are the key findings of the modelling update document:

"Key Findings:

• Vaccination in long-term care has paid off.

• Progress otherwise has stalled.Declines in community cases and test positivity have levelled off. Cases are increasing in most Public Health Units as we see mobility rise.

• Variants of concern continue to spread across Ontario. Our ability to control the rate of spread will determine whether we return to normal or face a third wave of infection. We know what works:continued masking and distancing are essential to controlling variants of concern.

• Our behaviour over the next few weeks is critical in determining the quality of our summer.

• High volumes of postponed care and missed screening and preventative care mean that there will be a substantial and prolonged surge in need for care across sectors. Our actions now affect our ability to access care later.

• Controlling cases, increasing vaccinations where they will have the greatest impact, and accelerating vaccinations overall are how we beat the pandemic"

I hope you'll take the time to read the Science Table's presentation.

What I like to see is how the models done for the past year compared to the reality. We all heard the apocalyptical predictions every month but we got no where near that grim. I am sure Doug Ford, John Tory, Dr Williams, Dr da Villa, etc. will say "we would be there" if we didn't restrict everybody like we have done!!!! To me these models are giving excuses to the govt to put restrictions in place. I doubt we will see anything special either and the science table will come back in 2 weeks with a revised model,

Personally I like to see Mississauga win the fight and get into red zone itself ahead of the rest of Peel Region namely Brampton. That will prove blanket lockdown of the whole PHU instead of dealing with the hot zones within is stupid!! Same as ban indoor dining in all "Restaurants" and closing of all "Gym" categories without looking at the sub-types.

Honestly they should allow seniors to bring along 2 people of younger age groups that live with them to get vaccinated. Prove from govt IDs required. That will speed things up dramatically.

There's lots of those around. I was in a warehouse with them stacked to the ceiling yesterday. As far as the eye can see. And a train half a km long being unloaded.

Maybe they are holding back stock to keep the discounts down.

Electric toothbrush I can understand. Last year even the dentists weren't allowed to open. Emergency dental clinic tends to go the quick-n-dirty way of extraction than repair.

Breast Pump is questionable. The Baby is the best breast pump there is in the whole world!!! My wife told me that after feeding 2 babies to 16 and 20 months. If mom is not working or working from home then why do they need to pump??!?!?!?

Data adjustments occasionally happen. I stumbled over this when doing some cross-checking today. Note the red-underlined numbers from the March 11 summary pdf (top) and the March 12 summary pdf (bottom).

Sudbury went to Grey today.

Also a lot of pressure is building on the province to change capacity limits to percentages rather than fixed numbers for indoor dining.

Finding appliances these days is almost impossible, as I learned in the last week.

We have 5+ year old Frigidaire stove. Like most stoves these days, they are made by Electrolux in the US, with offshore parts.

A pie was baking in the oven when the timer went off, although I hadn't set it. I went upstairs and discovered the oven had shut off and the display said F10 ERR. I shut the stove off at the breaker, let it cool down (the pie was burned) and did some research. It seemed like the mainboard had died and the oven had overheated.

I called the appliance repair firm, who arrived a couple of days later. They confirmed the main board was gone (nice burn marks when the relay popped) and ordered a new one. But they had no idea when it would be in and they suggested I look for a new stove. A day later they e-mailed me to say that if bought a new stove before the main board arrived, they would give me $50. So I went stove shopping (Mrs. DKS said "get us a stove." so I took that to heart; no amount was mentioned, although if I came home with a $4,000 Jenn-Air I might have some problems).

I started and ended at Leon's. I worked with the salesperson, who found every single stove I was looking at was out of stock with absolutely no idea when stock would be available. So she asked me, "Do you have a dollar limit?" I said, "No." So she went a bit upscale and found a top of the line KitchenAid stove (made by Electrolux in the US). I bought it. Delivery was not confirmed but expected by the end of March.

Apparently stocks of appliances are incredibly low to non-existent. We will see how long the stove takes to arrive. The stovetop is still working, thank goodness.

Took my in-laws nearly four months to get a new fridge in the Spring/Summer. And the living room furniture they ordered from Leon's never arrived and they ended up getting a refund and buying something else.

Shipping is kind of screwed across the board. Mail is all ground based for now, even for most overseas as passenger flights are few and far between. It is more than worth it to ask what they have in stock so you are not going after false hope. Nothing is more frustrating than making deposit or paid in full but nothing shows up week after week.

I was going to get a new Honda snow blower last fall. Ordered in September with Alphine lawn & garden equipment with a small deposit. Chased after it week after week of what supposed to be next week. They said stocks arrived in way smaller quantity than normal in the past. Ended up getting a Toro from them instead comes November when they still have Toro in stock for cash and pickup.

The hospitals run vaccine clinics got started yesterday. We pre-registered my mom and I got the email yesterday on how to register. Appointments were available for yesterday. She has to wait for another 10 days because she has Shingles vaccines few weeks back. Booking only allows 7 days in advance.

I personally know two 80+ folks here, who this past week each were called [by their family doctor's office, I believe], and now have appointments for 1st jabs for later this month.

I didn't ask where it will take place though.

And I know others in that bracket who have not yet been called.

Thanks - I forgot to check again later this afternoon.

LGL's new case numbers per 100K are well into Orange range, but no hospitalizations so far from this outbreak in one sector of the five, where an s.22 order was also invoked last weekend to help beat it back.

From the latest 7 days of daily data Feb 6 to 12...

• Case count = 19 + 8 - 1 + 7 + 11 + 8 + 10 = 62
• LGL population is 173170
• 62 * 100000 / 173170 = 35.8

That's deep orange, pushing near red. This is one case where I wouldn't complain about going into red a bit early.
