Testing of it always show them unplugging the cable which rarely happens in real life.
Fall over works but the firmware detects a connection to the modem as a connection to the internet and keeps switching back and fourth every 3 minutes or so.

Best solution i found so far is to either go for a enterprise solution or build a pfsense router which handles fall over and fall back correctly most of the time.

We have a primary cable connection and and a dsl backup.
Our pfsense box detects when the cable goes down and falls over to the dsl to keep things going.

quidnunc posted : Cable is unreliable here so we've also got dsl as a backup. The main concern if you decide to do it is configuration to switch between them either on router (one router dual wan) or at end user/device (switch between routers)

Originally we had the cable on an Asus RT-AC5300 and DSL on the SmartRG modem/router combo (with wifi and dhcp server disabled) and to switch either it was done with manual config to the DSL gateway in ip settings on the device or via a batch script on PC to switch back and forth (click on "switch to cable" or "switch to dsl" shortcuts on the desktop)

more recently I switched to a dual wan router (not on the asus wifi router as it was badly behaved) and some devices/protocols set to dsl or to cable in the router. downside is having to learn firewall/router software
