DocDrew posted : The FCC requires the info on an aggregate basis and ISPs of certain size have to publicize it. Often it's included in their network management policies.

Comcast report:
»www.xfinity.com/networkm ··· nagement

WOW report:
»www.wowway.com/docs/wow/ ··· fvrsn=20

It's not published on a regions, city, or node level. It's aggregate for the company, so bad performing pockets will be lost in the statistics. It's also done on a yearly or multi-year time frame so short times of poor performance also get lost in the statistics.

Luke_ posted : Not really. It’s not a set data. The performance at least for a cable network is constantly fluctuating within a given node. Cable operators do FCC end of line testing but that doesn’t go into the depth you want to know

khouli posted : Without purchasing each service and testing it myself, is there any way to know or estimate the expected network performance metrics of my local ISPs (other than max bandwidth)? e.g. latency to <nearest_metropolitan_area/>, uptime, avg. packet loss, average available bandwidth, available bandwidth at peak hours, etc.

I have two local ISPs in my area that both offer sufficient bandwidth but I'd like to know about their non-maximum-bandwidth metrics. I've tried and tried but I can't find this sort of information online. I finally called both ISPs but of course the salespeople I talked to had no clue what I was asking. I expected this and I felt guilty about "quizzing" them but even when I finally convinced them to just transfer my call to a more technical person they still had no clue what I was talking about. Honestly, at that point I was surprised, frustrated, and rather disappointed. Neither ISP sales team even understood nor could transfer me to someone who understood the concept of network latency. I realize that I'm only a residential customer and I'm sure it's a somewhat uncommon question but I still thought there'd at least be one person in the entire building who knew that there's any performance metric besides bandwidth. :uhh:

Obviously the ISP engineers are indeed collecting and studying this sort of data but it seems like there's just no way of getting them to share it with us. Is there any "magic word" or method to get them to get access to this data? At the very least, you'd think that each ISP would be willing to share the numbers that advantage them.

I don't know if there's any way to do this. Maybe if I called them and asked about their commercial offerings to my area then I could get an engineer or more technical person on the line and suss out a sense of the quality of their infrastructure?

Thanks!

(My two local ISPs are Comcast/Xfinity and Wide Open West/WOW.)
