[Gigablast] What is actually obtainable

Has any one seen 1 gig speed from DOCSIS 3.1? When I had it all I could get was 550 mbps. They claim "up to" 1gig I never saw it

I get 940mbps pretty consistently. I've had D3.1 since the day it went live in my market. My experience with it has been good.

It depends on the node utilization and configuration. Mine is oversubscribed with 24 D3.0 channels and one OFDM downstream (likely 28 Mhz wide) and I tend to get 400-600 during the day and 920 in early mornings. This is based on automated speed tests from router to modem.

So, there could be one of a number of things going on. First, if you are hardwired, the max realistic speed you will see is around 940Mbps. That is due to Ethernet overhead of a 1Gbps link. Obviously, you are well below that, so that is not your problem. Next, if you are not wired, that is a pretty darn good speed. For a really good 5GHz 802.11ac link rate is 866Mbps and getting over half of that would be extremely good. There are so many variables in wireless connections that would make that so. Next, lets assume you are on wired. A lot of routers (especially older ones) are under powered for handling a gigabit throughput, so that could be an issue. Next, it is possible (but unlikely) that you are provisioned wrong. Check the modem status page (typically 192.168.100.1) to see the downstream connection. Finally, cable is shared bandwidth locally with your neighbors. Try testing at off peak hours to see if there is any change. Generally, the idea is that you get your advertised speeds most of the time and only get slowed down a bit at peak times when you might be slowed elsewhere on the internet anyways.

Good luck.

Are these speeds over a wired connection? Not gonna get much more than that if it's over wifi.

Also need a decent computer for full gig as well. Just not something lower end.

on Comcast I got 940/42 pretty much 24/7 (until Covid hit, then my node had quite a bit more usage on it)

RCN seems to run a ~140MHz OFDM channel, and only 16 DOCSIS 2/3 channels, so it does get the full download speed at all times... but the upload here on RCN is only ~25Mbps with over provision.

Over wired the issue went away when I switched to att fiber I had four Techs come out and tell me that five to six hundred megabytes is all I can get. If that's truly the case why even sell gig service.

When Gigablast first came out I had a hard time using the DSLReports Speed Test. I would get a failure notice due to speed in excess of 1gig.

As time went on and more folks went to Gigablast, my speeds came down and I was able to use the DSLReports Speed test. My results were typically in the 940 range.

Once the Covad Virus kicked in, my speed tests dropped as low as 400mb and as high as 800mb.

If I run a local speed test (testing site within 25 miles from my house), I get results starting in the 940mb range which ultimately bottoms out at the 880mb range.

Also even a half way decent router if using firewall and filtering can slow it down. Plus certain routers have certain settings that slow them down that need turn in or off to make faster.
