Radeon RX 5600 XT: HDMI Sound Muted Until I Turn My Monitor Off/On

Audio Signal Chain: PowerColor Red Dragon RX 5600 XT (HDMI Port 2) -> Denon AVR-X3400H
Video Signal Chain: PowerColor Red Dragon RX 5600 XT (HDMI Port 2) -> Denon AVR-X3400H -> Samsung 27" 4K QLED monitor

Problem (Video): Video signal is fine.
Problem (Audio): Audio signal drops out randomly.

Here's the video I uploaded to LBRY detailing my problem:

Has anyone encountered the same issue I'm having with my RX 5600 XT? Line output from my sound card is fine, except I can only get stereo sound to my receiver.

What happens when you take the Denon out of the mix?

Then I will have to plug in my headphone straight to my monitor. I will give it a try.

If its good direct to the screen, maybe look into a usb DAC. This would isolate the audio and video signals. I used to run one and then connect it to my denon via a coax rca cable.

You might have to manually select between a usb audio device, and the hdmi output if you go this route. I tried doing hdmi out for speakers, and headphones to find that at least my distro didn't auto switch.

I hate to find that my receiver is the culprit, because when I was in GTX 960, the audio to my receiver is rock solid. My next purchase will be the NVIDIA graphics card...

It turns out, other people are having the same issue, but only related to Windows 10 with no mention of Linux at all.
»community.amd.com/thread/241539

Here's what one poster said:
quote:
There is no reason why we shouldn't be able to. I was using Nvidia cards running through Denon AVR's for years (10+years) in the exact same setup (PC to AVR to Monitor/TV) without a single issue.
So as I said, no issues in the NVIDIA side.

Also, if I have to buy a DAC, I will lose out on uncompressed 5.1 surround sound.

Pretty sure my DAC just passes-through the signal, then the denon can process that.. however it wants. Most have spdif optical , too.

Mine worked!

I have a DisplayPort cable that I can use for my 4K display. Denon now has a resolution set to 1920x1080 and my display through DisplayPort now has a resolution of 3840x2160. To restrict mouse movement, I put screen 1 in diagonal.

So now when I play Final Fantasy XII or watch a few YouTube videos in Linux, the audio through HDMi continues to work non-stop. I do not need to turn off my monitor and turn it back on or switch inputs in my receiver.

Of course, the minus side of using DisplayPort is no on-screen volume control or on-screen menu, so if I need to access the menu, I will need to switch my monitor to HDMI and then switch back to DisplayPort. However, that's only temporary, especially if I need to recalibrate my receiver in the future.

All in all, no issues so far. My theory is that there's probably not enough bandwidth needed to send both 5.1 audio and video signal over HDMI to my receiver. I can be off-base on that, but that is my only theory I have.

I will report back if I'm going to run into issues again. I'm thinking I won't.

As of 11:30 PM EDT at the time of writing, I'm watching TWiT Live since 10:44 PM EDT and the audio from GPU is playing non-stop. For a test, I'm going to be watching Security Now live around 4:30 PM EDT if I'm home at the time.

That makes sense. HDMI is just barely enough for AV so when the data stream increases the sound drops out because video gets priority. Saved for future reference. Glad you found a solution!

Yeah, as if 18Gbps is not good enough for 4K video and uncompressed 5.1-channel audio...

Anyway, my current configuration produced a side effect when using GNOME magnifier. Because I'm visually impaired, I use GNOME magnifier from time to time and the current configuration causes the mouse pointer to not be centered on screen.
»open.lbry.com/@GraysonPe ··· hTCGRWup

And it looks like I don't have a screenshot of my monitor configuration. Uploading it again...

Well, I didn't hit the "Upload" button.

Update: Submitted an issue to GNOME's Mutter team.

Today, the audio from my graphics card dropped out on me. Luckily since my monitor is set to DisplayPort, I can just switch inputs in my receiver and get the audio back. Once I exit the game, I decided to set the resolution to 800x600 at 60.32 Hz for my home theater receiver, which is kind of odd if you ask me.

Even better, the mouse cursor is almost at the center of the screen given that I lowered the resolution for the first display and kept the same resolution at 3840x2160 for my monitor currently set to DisplayPort.

And I have submitted a review for a DisplayPort to HDMI cable to try as a different solution. Turns out the "4K Resolution Ready" does not mean I will get 3840x2160 at 60Hz, as the maximum resolution for the cable that I returned to Amazon is at 3840x2160 at 30Hz.
»www.amazon.com/gp/custom ··· trvw_srp

It's actually my fault for buying a "4K Resolution Ready" cable as that reminded me of a Marantz SR5008 receiver that I purchased 7 years ago. The receiver advertises "4K Ready," but as far as I know, that receiver can only do 30Hz at 4K resolution. I should have purchased SR5007, which is a 2012 model that is discontinued. I was thinking about that last year when I bought a new receiver from Amazon, a Denon AVR-X3400H. About 1.5 years ago, my receiver became a victim of Hurricane Michael: the tree struck down my mom's house and my receiver became soaked in water. After I let SR5008 dry for the next couple of days, I started using the receiver again and it worked until a few months later (2019) that my receiver started making weird noises such as crackling and squealing.
»www.amazon.com/gp/produc ··· F8&psc=1

So I went to Amazon and looked for a new Denon receiver. After I look at the prices for X3400H and X3500H, I realize that the amplifier is the same, so why spend a couple hundred dollars extra for the very same amplifier!? Why? Is AVR-X3500H going to give me a much better sound compared to last generation model that is cheaper to buy? NO! Honestly, I could have bought an AVR-X3300H, which is two generations before, but it will take 2 weeks to have it shipped.
»www.amazon.com/gp/produc ··· F8&psc=1

I could have saved some money and bought the X3300H which didn't have HeOS. I can have Home Assistant talk to my home theater receiver by controlling volume when I start a movie using KODI, but I didn't specify a default gateway for my receiver; thus, no connection to the Internet.

Anyway, even though I don't mind sharing a story, I went off-topic.

Let's just see how my setup goes with a lower resolution for my receiver.

Okay. While playing Final Fantasy 12 for hours (I'm in The Great Crystal), the sound dropped out, so I switched inputs in my receiver to get the sound back up and running again. That is through HDMI from my computer with a resolution of 800x600. To me, that is very rare. That's the lowest resolution I can send to my receiver, so 640x480 is not an option in the GNOME's display setting. My monitor through DisplayPort directly from my computer is set to 3840x2160 at 60Hz. The drop out does not happen every single day, so it only happened tonight.

TL;DR: Sound from Radeon graphics card dropped out even at 800x600 just once.

No, HDMI works fine. My receiver does not have 7.1 analog inputs unlike my previous Marantz AVR-SR5008. Even if it does, Audyssey won't work and all the DSP is bypassed in the receiver.

If the audio drops out again (which will not happen in a very long time), I'll just switch inputs and back. No big deal compared to when I have 3840x2160 sent to my receiver and to my monitor just by using only an HDMI cable. I could probably blame this issue on my AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT as the audio has been rock solid when GTX 960. That's all I can do.

Anyway, all's well.

Oh, here's my question: What if I want to do 5.1.2, 5.1.4, or 7.1.4 (if I have a high-end receiver that can do support 4 Dolby Atmos speakers)? My answer: HDMI Audio is the only way to go.

Hey @DonoftheDead, in case you want to use mine as a future reference, I bought an HDMI 2.1 cable to see if the cable will solve the problem and today, I've had no audio drop out until tonight when the audio silently dropped out even though no sound is playing. As I play a live-streaming video in YouTube, the audio began to drop out a couple of times and I switched inputs in my receiver.

HDMI 2.1 cable:
»www.amazon.com/gp/produc ··· F8&psc=1

HDMI 2.0 cable:
»www.amazon.com/gp/produc ··· F8&psc=1

I think it is the Radeon RX 5600 XT that just can't send enough data stream that causes audio to drop out on me, so it has nothing to do with the cables that I currently have.

So it's either back to GTX 960 (only supports HDMI 1.4 if I am right) or simply stick with 3840x2160 for monitor 1 and 800x600 for monitor 2. Right now, the audio is playing without any problems with my current setup.

And no, I'm not switching to analog unless my Denon receiver has 5.1 or 7.1 multi channel inputs... (sigh)

I suppose I could spend my money on getting a GTX 1650 just for testing purposes, but I'm not going to waste my money right now.
