Re: nVidia announcement coming Aug 31

I'm on board for this. Got my 1070 back at launch and skipped the 20xx series, so I'm going in on a 3070 this fall. I'd love a 3080, but they're way too rich for my blood.

My son wants to play MS Flight Simulator and I doubt his GTX 760 is gonna cut it, so he gets my 1070.

Now I just need a better display. Never used anything better than 1080p/60! Do you all recommend a native 4K display or is QHD (1440p) good enough these days? I used to hear that 4K/60 was difficult for even the best of today's cards, but maybe that's changed with DLSS 2.0. I'm kind of out of the loop.

Well it depends. If you're going for top competitiveness you might want 1080P@240hz, if you just want beauty 4K@120hz is great.

LTT did a comparison awhile back (as close to double blind as possible) to see weather it was a better experience with higher fps or higher res. At least for the people working at LMG they leaned to higher FPS.

Yes there are some 144hz 4K, but that requires enabling compression so while you might not notice it (or you might) the image resolution isn't really 4K anymore. (It's a limit of the current DP spec, it can do 4K120hz as it's max, to go higher goes beyond it's current bandwidth so it has to do compression.)

On the other end 1080p takes less GPU power so it's easier for it to get to 240fps, and the panels are able to do upto 240hz. So for a fast twitch type game super high refresh rate with matching FPS works better.

BTW while many say you can't see at 240hz, some people see it as smoother and less choppy.

Also ATM LTT seems enamored with the Samsung G9 monitor (it's an ultra wide 5120 x 1440 capable of 240hz) Seems to be very new and not widely available yet.

It's still true. DLSS helps a lot but devs must code and implement it, which is very few games currently.

Currently even a 2080Ti struggles with 4K60 with modern games.

Yup. 4K60 is possible in modern games but it ain't gonna be at max settings and even then you are talking the top end cards almost exclusively to get there. My 2070 for example can run a handful of games at 4K60 consistently but they absolutely aren't at max settings. Trying Monster Hunter World at 4K was pretty darn hilarious, poor card sounded like it was going to fly to the fucking moon. Really solid option for 1440p though. Or if there is something wrong with you and you're fine with 4K30.

DLSS does make a huge difference if a game supports it but they are few and far between. I think as more games implement DLSS though it will continue to just amp up the value of the RTX line, DLSS is really impressive.

It really depends on how efficiently the game is programmed. I have a 2070 super which would struggle at 4K in a lot of titles. But one of the first I tried streaming to my Shield TV in 4K was Dark Souls 3 and that was buttery smooth and the detail was a sight to behold. I have no issues with games like Bayonetta but not getting there with games like the new Microsoft flight simulator hahaha.
