I have a USB NIC i can use to add a second ethernet port. So PPPoE passthrough would just say that 2nd nic is is the WAN, set up PPPoE on it, then connect that port into a LAN port on the home hub? Or is it more complicated than that? Maybe put it in the DMZ on the homehub? I've never done PPPoE through another device thats already connected via PPPoE.

Yes, it's as simple as that. Once you do PPPoE it'll get a public IP on the WAN. No need to tag VLAN, HH3000 does that work for you, or passes it through in a magical way.
I'm setup this way, and only on the 500 package, so I don't need to go through the extra work to eliminate the 3K (yet).

Cool, thank you. I will give that a try tonight after I finish work. The other stuff I'll try on the weekend, once I can dedicate another big chunk of time to it and can afford to have the internet out for a few hours.

Just got done with work and was able to test using the USB Ethernet adapter as the WAN port, with PPPoE through the homehub, and it works without issue. Connection is authenticated, same gateway I was seeing with the 10gbe ethernet card, everything looks identical in pfsense except TCP traffic just passes without issue. Loaded up youtube and watched the traffic graphs to make sure i wasnt accidentally connected to wifi or something, and nope, everythings going through pfsense as expected.

So I think this narrows it down to my 10gbe card... is there any way I can get more stats or logs to see if its having problems handling packets or negotiating the connection or anything like that? All I know about is the SystemLogs page in pfsense, im pretty new to BSD. I dont have another 10gbe card I can try and ordering a new one itll take a few weeks to get here these days, so if theres any troubleshooting I can do with this one thats definitely the way I'd prefer to go.

I'll test the other port on the 10gbe this weekend and see if that helps. I might also try opnsense to see if theres maybe some driver conflict or something since they claim to use different drivers. Anything else anyone can suggest I am ready and eager to try as well.
