dentman42 posted : You may need to set your TV to the same 3D mode as the cable box. Side by side and Top bottom (aka over under) modes are frequently not auto detected. You can also find 3D videos on Youtube...search for "3d side by side" "3d sbs" "3d hsbs" (half side by side, side by size squeezes both frames horizontally and if TV isn't in 3D mode you will see the same frame doubled and horizontally squeezed - top bottom works the same except image is squeezed vertically and you see it doubled one on top of the other). Also "3d top botton". Just "3d" may find some but you'll also wind up with other types of 3D stuff like 3D rendered.

For IR synced glasses, the format is actually determined by the emitter but I believe Sony is proprietary and only their emitter works with their tv, if its even external (some tvs have built in emitters). There is a "VESA stereo" 3D IR emitter standard using a 3 pin mini DIN connector and many tvs and projectors use this which allows use of any compatible emitter, but the actual sync protocol still can vary. I have 1 VESA emitter that seems to use the Phillips protocol and another that uses the Panasonic/Toshiba protocol. Confusing enough yet? There are also Bluetooth emitters that use the VESA interface, and had 3D TV not been discontinued here (last I heard it was still big in China), all newer sets had switched to a single Bluetooth standard. There's also DLP-link protocol used by many DLP tvs and projectors and many of these also have a VESA emitter jack (like my Mitsubishi DLP tv).

There are also universal glasses. I think Xpand still makes a universal IR pair that supports Samsung/Mitsubishi, Panasonic/Toshiba, Sony, Phillips, and 1 or 2 other protocols. I have 1 pair that is universal IR and Bluetooth but they are discontinued.

DocDrew posted : Huh?

The box doesn't make movies 3D. It can pass on 3D movies if they're broadcast in 3D from the channel provider (then the box has to be set to pass the format to the TV correctly) but nobody is doing that now. The 3D content will look messed up if viewed in standard mode, if it looks normal in standard mode then it's not 3D formatted.

If you already have the right glasses for the TV to watch Bluray's in 3D, there is nothing different you need for the cable box.

Really you're not seeing 3D effect on cable because there is no 3D content.

deaddyfreddy posted : You would use whatever type of glasses came with your TV. If your TV is passive, you’d use passive 3D glasses, if your TV uses active glasses, then you’d use active 3D glasses. For passive, you can use the glasses that were issued for theatrical 3D releases. If active you need the ones that came with your TV.

Simulated 3D generally doesn’t look that good IMO, but it depends on the content and the TV. Years ago Time Warner carried HBO 3D On Demand and Starz 3D On Demand for real 3D content, I don’t think that’s the case anymore. They also carried ESPN 3D as a linear channel until Disney shut it down.

It’s been so long, I forgot the significance of side by side versus top and bottom. There’s a third option too, Checkerboard, but I don’t believe it’s supported by the cable box.

I haven’t used the 3D functionality of my TV in years. Unless you have a 3D blu ray player and can get some blu rays for cheap, I wouldn’t bother with 3D. It was a novelty that didn’t last that long. There area few good ones like Avatar. I have all Sony gear, and Sony was really pushing their own animated movies like Open Season, Monster House and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, all of which were awesome in 3D. Live action is pretty hit and miss, mostly miss IMO.
