It is probably related to your shoes being good insulators, like you mention. If changing to leather healed shoes is not in the cards, how about holding onto the A or B pillar on exit? Using a coin, or some other small metal object to hold and touch (lightly - no scratches please) to the car body should provide a less obnoxious ground discharge. Years ago, "Grounding Straps" were common on cars with "Custom" interiors utilizing high static producing material. I have read that supposedly these days low rolling resistance tires can inhibit normal grounding.

Someone I used to interact with made it DIY, they just got a spray bottle and mixed some water and downy. (I'm not sure of the mixing ratio)

Ya, but for SciFi in any visual format (movie and TV) something the viewer can see is more likely to be used, and RFID could be hidden and thus not seen and that's not great for the viewer.

In the deeper winter here in Virginia, I find that if I dampen my hands before touching say, the light switch I that "breaks" the static buildup...

I'd put money on those zaps igniting fumes on a hot day no question...thankfully my tank is a plastic screw-in cap with a tiny pressure release whole that is baffled in design cause cars here in summer the tank itself gets to the ambient temp of around 106 °f.

I believe "ground yourself (or oneself)" is the general terminology. Does this happen to you all the time or just in the winter which given where you live, is not your current season. I've experienced that (really annoying) static build up in the winter only because the air is so dry...

The circumstances for some little static to ignite a gas station is crazy low.

I personally have to earth my body each time I exit my vehicle because of the type of shoes I wear.
It has happened with the last 2 types of sneakers I have worn when rubbed on the drivers carpet floor pan. I find I need to plant my fist on the vehicle to dispell quite a static build up. If I don't it zaps my leading finger when locking the car with the key..
I have only managed once to get all the way to the gas tank and was lucky enough to touch the rear quarter panel before unscrewing the cap. A serious static charge is quite viable and I fret it each time I fill up.

Well what I heard was along the lines that some dumb person would do something dumb.

IE like leave the pump in the car, drive off and somehow ignite it.

Though dumb people exist everywhere and yes you can find videos of people that leave the nossle in the filler hole and drive off ripping the hose off the pump. (I haven't seen any where that ignited though, and most pumps have protections that cut the flow so it doesn't just empty the underground tank.)

Seems like a made up rumor. Since I grew up there and still have family there. I’m sure they would said something . They love pointing out the stupidity of pot smokers in Oregon.

If you ask my aunt the reason they don’t change law. The lazy wife’s of politicians in Salem are to lazy to pump their own.

Ya, IIRC Oregon was scared that their very dumb citizens would start fires if they pumped their own gas. (I heard that shortly after they opened self serv in some areas some fires happened.)

Though many gas stations around here only staff one person at a time, so they can't do full serv.

Though a few have two people on shift.

Ether way I wouldn't want to sit there waiting for someone to come and something so utterly simple. I'm not some pre-K kid that's to stupid to do a simple task.
