It's rare gigabyte services makes sense in a residential setting unless you really want instant gratification with downloading/pirating content and even then VPN will the bottleneck unless you are downloading naked. Even 200-300 is well more than enough for most households.
That would be excruciatingly slow when a new game comes out and I need to download 100+ Gigabytes of data to multiple machines. Right now I can max out my FiOS connection downloading to two Xboxes. With just one Xbox downloading at 500 to 600 Mb/s speeds. While my Playstations have speeds that are still stuck at slow 300Mb/s. I do something multiple times a week that will max out my FiOS gigabit download or upload speeds. Whether it's a game update, windows updates, program updates, or backups.
If there was a big difference between the gigabit tier and the 500/500 speed tier I could consider switching. But I'm sure after a few days with the slower speeds I would get pissed and switch back to gigabit. Just like I did once many years ago. I got gigabit the first day it was available. And then a couple of years later I had dropped down to a slower speed. But I could not stand waiting with those slower speeds so a short time later I switched back to gigabit. And have been on that tier ever since.
And especially now, that gigabit internet is only costing me $20 as part of a triple play. Any change would make my price go up anyway.
