Why not just port directly to G Voice and avoid the middle step (and additional potential issues)?

Because Google Voice won't let you do that. My guess is that the lack of 911 calls is the reason why GV won't allow any landlines be ported over.

Because Google Voice won't let you do that. My guess is that the lack of 911 calls is the reason why GV won't allow any landlines be ported over.

It's actually because porting a landline phone is a far harder bureaucratic process than a mobile phone.
