Brits found too polite for phone scammers

»www.theregister.com/2021 ··· scammed/
quote:
Brits are too polite to tell phone scammers to "get stuffed", "take a hike" or "sling yer 'ook" when they impersonate so-called "trusted organisations" such as banks. That's according to the trade association UK Finance, which found that the number of "impersonation scam cases" more than doubled in the first half of 2021 to 33,115 – up from 14,947 during the same period last year. The industry body reckons these particular frauds – whether by text, email, or voice calls – have duped "even the savviest" punters out of almost £200m over the last year or so and all because people "don't want to seem rude." Its "Take Five" national campaign is designed to raise awareness amid warnings that fraudsters target people's emotional weaknesses to trick them. The call for Brits to toughen up comes as consumer champion Which? warned its own research found that SMS phishing (smishing) attacks in the UK grew by nearly 700 per cent in the first half of 2021 compared to the previous six months.

I beg to differ.

Even their rebuttals are polite and civil.

I am reminded of a story once told by either H. Allen Smith or Clifton Fadiman.

Nigel and James are walking through Regent's park when James sees a distinguished looking gentleman sitting on a park bench reading a book.

"Nigel, look there, I believe that's the Archishop of Canterbury!"

"James, I admit he does bear a resemblance, but I seriously doubt he's the Archbishop."

"But Nigel, I've seen his picture many times on the News and in the Mail. It has to be him."

"Well, perhaps so. Why don't you go ask him?"

So, off goes James to the bench. He politely clears his throat;
"Pardon me for the interruption your Grace, but aren't you the Archbishop of Canterbury?"

Without looking up from his book, the gentleman responds,
"Bugger off y' old sod, I'm busy"

James turns and walks back to where Nigel was waiting.

"Well, is he the Archbishop?"

"I don't know for sure. He didn't say he was and he didn't say he wasn't."

I'm sure reading and posting on this site helped in that too.

We are also sarcastic, a sport many of us enjoy is scammer baiting keeping them on the line with ever more ridiculous responses until they give up in frustration usually accompanied by a torrent of abuse as they realise you have been wasting their time and taking the piss. Same goes with the cold calls about car accidents that weren't your fault. T'is a jolly old jape.

But the Scots, on the other hand, appear to have very few scammers calling them.

Of course this could be due to a language barrier...

I think The War of 1812, the Battle of Vimy Ridge, and Canadians feeling their oats after losing the Stanley Cup would beg to differ Just sayin'
