Re: [AT&T Fiber] 2000 and 5000 plans now available in Raleigh

said by FlatWorld:

Despite my neighborhood having literally 2 FTTP providers, we still have homes just built that sign up for Spectrum cable internet. You would be surprised at how many people have absolutely no understanding of how Internet is delivered. The majority of consumers believe that any “Wi-Fi line” is just as good as the other.

In my new construction neighborhood virtually everyone is signing up for AT&T Fiber and not Spectrum. Like clockwork, the homes close, then 2 days later, you see the AT&T truck.

The one neighbor I knew who went with Spectrum didn't understand that AT&T was offering fiber, and switched as soon as she found out. AT&T Fiber is both cheaper and faster, so it appeals to both the technical and non-technical people. I think if Spectrum made a better attempt to compete on price they might have picked some of these customers up, because as you say, a lot of them don't care about the underlying tech.

This neighborhood has a lot of affluent retirees 50+. What I found most shocking is how many of them are cutting the cord. A lot of them say they broke their TV watching habits during the pandemic, so they figure it's a good time to try the internet based services.

I must be in the minority by still have a Directv dish. I like the fact that is is not dependent on backhoe fade...

Most of the 45 homes in my new subdivision went with att fiber. My neighbor had spectrum and switched. He’s very happy with the download speeds.

I did, too. Until a few months ago when the roof was replaced. I don't feel like climbing up there to plant a new one. Or involved lawyers for the illegal activities of the HOA and management company. (because of trees they won't trim or remove, I can't honor their "don't put it where it can be seen" mandate -- which is itself illegal.) There's almost nothing on cable I care to watch. Everyone has gone to their individual, custom "Go" streaming service. (even the broadcast HBO doesn't have shit to watch anymore.)

Same here. I'm one of the few with a DirecTV dish also, for that exact same reason. Although here we get OTA reception, so that might be enough of a backhoe / interns-in-the-datacenter contingency plan.
