Charter doesn't have the same speed tiers nationwide. Around 15% of their areas have Standard 100/10 tier, while the rest have 200/10 as Standard. A small but growing number have 1000/500 FTTH, while other areas with FTTH are stuck on the same 200/10, 400/20, 940/35 commonly marketed tiers. Some have ELP, most don't. There are a handful of other tiers out their not every one in Charter can get.

If Comcast actually has no plans to raise speeds on the existing tiers, they probably will upgrade to 300/10 or something, but I recommended they wait to see if they get the free upgrade some time this year.

It would be nice if they had the same speed tiers nationwide, like Charter and other cable providers already do, and have been doing for years already.

They are. It just takes time to get all areas to support it when their service passes and provides service to more homes then any other US broadband provider.

It's not a bad decision to Comcast in your case though. You made it clear your parents aren't going to another provider or are willing to pay more. There's no down side for Comcast by making your parents wait longer. They're going to sit and wait for Comcast.

Your family is not stuck. It was a business decision to not upgrade, either to prepaid 50/10 or another available tier with higher upload for a few more dollars per week.

It was a choice the person who pays the bills made to wait for a "free upgrade". Their desire to possibly stream 1080p video calls trouble free isn't worth it to them.

Back in 2012 Charter stopped allowing customer owned modems so they could standardize on a limited set of provided modems. The FCC fined them for it and they had to allow customer modems again.

Charter wants as many company provided modems as possible, so they're free. They have to allow customer modems due to FCC decree and they can't hide it.

Because not everyone wants to use the crappy modem/router combos they provide. I have a much better enterprise Wi-Fi AP that I use instead, and I already had the modem. I bought it years ago.

Except for a very few areas Spectrum hasn't provided combo router/modems in years... Since they started offering their own branded equipment. All of those are stand alone modems. Their routers are only provided if you pay extra for them.

Because some people already own one, and prefer to use their own instead of the low-quality modem/router combos they provide.

I have my own enterprise Wi-Fi 6 AP that I use instead.

If Spectrum keeps their historical pattern, they won't support the latest stuff on customer owned modems for a year or more while they test. It'll be their equipment only for awhile after launch.

Since 2016, actually. They began deploying it in 2016, and in 2017 they began offering the 1000/500 speed tier.

TDC (owner of Yousee) is 1.2 GHz in its entire footprint, so FDX (with amplifiers) could make the most sense for them to pursue in a few years. They may end up being a first mover again (the competition is fierce, so they cannot afford standing still for too long). :-)

All of Charter's Spectrum branded modems they've been using the last 2 years support high-split. You've got one right?

Several other OEM makers for provider branded modems also have them. Netgear just had the CM3050V certified in the last CableLabs certification wave completed, CW138, which makes it the 12th high-split capable modem certified for the American market. There are 4 more waves scheduled for this year so there is plenty of time for more modems to be certified by the time any provider actually offers high-split to customers.

I could be misremembering, but I seem to recall there is a (switchable) MoCA filter in the unit, and that Comcast needed to turn it on due to some customers (who presumably were using MoCA) had issues (I suspect the customers MoCA devices were overloading the tuner of the SB8200).

It should be noted that these are marketing documents, not done/reviewed/corrected by what I would consider real engineers, so I would not depend on any of the details being fully complete and accurate.

it also makes no sense that the sb8200 specifically says it supports 2gbps+ upstream when it clearly does not have high split written on it.

I don’t think we’ll ever know for sure until we attempt to put them on a high-split system and see if they sync at those high frequencies. I know people cracked open some SB8200’s and “CM8200” was printed on the PCB. Of course that could still mean the tuners themselves are different and everything else is the same.

Just curious, do you have a source stating that the CM8200 and SB8200 have different hardware and capabilities?

From everything I can find, the SB8200 also has a switchable diplex filter to support high-split, but has only been certified in the US for 85MHz so far. That doesn't mean the hardware isn't there, and it can't be upgraded in the future should it be certified for high-split later on.

It wouldn't make much sense for the cable companies to require customers to swap out their existing 3.1 modems for a high-split variant if their current modem already has the necessary hardware.

From a press release when both modems were announced in 2015:

"Arris said the MSO-focused model, the Touchstone CM8200, can support up to 5 Gbps downstream and up to 2 Gbps upstream, enabled through switchable filters supporting a widened upstream of up to 204 MHz, and 1.2 GHz in the downstream."

"The SURFboard SB8200 has the same technical capabilities of the CM8200, but is tagged for retail distribution."

Sounds like literally the only difference is that one is for sale to ISPs to provide to customers, and the other is a retail model. The hardware capabilities are identical.
