Re: Telus Launches PureFibre X, Offers Canada?s Fastest Internet Speeds

So I have a bit of a theory now.

It looks like Telus has been installing the NA20A device on both GPON installations (up to 1.5 gig service) and XGSPON (2.5 gig service).

Based on a lot of reading, it looks like bridge mode works correctly if you are on the GPON network, but if you are on the XGSPON network bridge mode seems to be broken. (Windows machine gets a public IP but ZERO traffic will pass, my pfsense firewall it won't even get an IP).

Both installations use a SFP module and a APC fiber connector. In my case, both were Nokia branded, but the GPON SFP module is a bit larger than the XGSPON module. (I will take a picture of the 2 and post here when I get a chance). The technician had to re-patch the fiber run to my house at the splitter - he told me that there is a separate feed coming into the splitters for XGSPON as it runs on a different wavelength. (This is unverified information).

Further, if you are on the GPON network, the SFP module it self is registered with Telus, which is why you can pull it out and use it in another device. The XGSPON network they actually use the "XGSPON" serial number on the NA20A to register the device, so its looking like you wont be able to use the SFP module in your own hardware unless someone finds a work around.

The installer in my area trained on the 2.5 gig service is also a friend of mine so he is going to try and run it up the ladder if he can and see if we can get anywhere.

I will post an update if I get anywhere. If you DO have 2.5 gig and bridge works, let me know!

The tech who did my install initially couldn't activate my service in the backend, so they had to go to the local beige box a few blocks away and do something, then they came back and said I was one of the first people to have this new service in my area, so presumably had to do what you mentioned. I know most people around my area have Telus Fibre, so it does point to some changes required for cabling.

I am hoping that small size doesn't mean they've offloaded some of the "brains" of the SFP+ module to the host via some proprietary protocol. In case anybody was wondering, the actual printing on the SFP+ module says Nokia model # 3fe46901aa (no, that's not the MAC address its the actual model #).

I've also opened a case with Ubiquity, but so far they've said its "not supported" since it's not on their compatibility list.

I've also tried it on the Intel based SFP+ x520 network card, and after modifying the EEPROM and the driver to bypass the infamous "incompatible SFP+ error" it doesn't work, in fact ethtool can't even set or detect a speed or advertised modes.

I have a feeling this may be exactly what they have done. Prior to the ugprade I did have my GPON SFP module plugged directly into my pfsense firewall working fine - I'd much rather do this with the new service as well BUT I am willing to settle on a working bridge mode.

I have also been having speed issues, I get full upload speed but my download speed seems to be stuck at 1 gig. The funny thing is before the upgrade I was on the 1.5 gig plan and I got the full 1.5 gig download on my PC using the exact same router, switches and computer. So for the 3rd time the tech is coming back today to troubleshoot but we have determined its almost 100% a backend issue that no one can figure out. (Apparently very few people have been trained on the XGSPON network).

If its not running today I'm gonna pull the plug and have them put me back on the GPON network until they get this all sorted out.

Big update.

The Telus tech brought a new piece of hardware. He says they are only suppose to use it for voice installations but he wanted to see if it would work for me since it only operates in bridge mode (I think it’s similar to the old white Nokia ont).

It does not use a sfp module but does have a 10 gig port. It worked I now have a public wan IP on the 2.5 gig service. Speed issue is still present but this is a big step in the right direction.

The unit is a Nokia XS-250X—A

Thanks for the update. I don't have the speed issue, I am getting the full 2.5. However, when I first phoned in, they said my service was "incorrectly provisioned" and they needed to re provision it as part of troubleshooting bridge mode. Unfortunately, I did not do a speed test before that with 10G gear to see if I had the issue before that.

I presume you are connecting via the 10Gbps LAN port to a SFP+ via a RJ45 transceiver?

I found that some of the transceivers can be finicky, that results in slower speeds. I've had the most success with the Wiitek 10GBase-T 10G RJ45 to SFP+ Copper Transceiver...

I'm running a full Ubiquiti stack on Telus 1Gbps fiber and see consistent speeds of 930 - 949 using these transceivers, others that I have tried have dropped the speeds to below 500Gbps...

Cheers

I'm currently running a dual port RJ45 10gb Broadcom card on my pfsense server. So no transceiver between the telus unit and the router it self.

I get the same results as pictured no matter what configuration I try, including my computer plugged directly into the telus 10 gig port. So the speed issue seems to be on the telus side of things.

Funny. I have same Wiitek plugged into Netgear XS708T and Intel i225-V connected sees full speed receiving, but only 500Mb/s transmitting. After trying every possible option in driver settings, I exchanged it for new unit, and same issue. They finally agreed to refund full cost and left the transceiver with me. They said it must be the card because it works with Realtek cards (the only one they tested with).

Interesting indeed... I'd be curious to see if you have any different results if you ran the speedtest directly from the pfsense router hardware, and not via a connected computer...

Just for a FYI instructions to install speedtest onto the pfsense router under BSD if you're so inclined to try..
