Re: Optimum Fiber lack of battery backup during power outages

Right now they have backup power at all the HFC boxes on the poles. So I don't know why they couldn't have batteries at each fiber cabinet considering there are A LOT less fiber cabinets than HFC boxes. I understand that the batteries won't last long during power outages, but before I upgraded from HFC to Fiber I got at least 8 hours or more out of their network before it died during a power outage. As of right now there is absolutely no backup and the service will go down the second the power goes out. Which will be a lot especially if it goes out every time the power cuts out for 1 or 2 seconds. In my opinion that's unacceptable..

In the area I live, cell reception is poor and some areas don't have any at all. So the only option is optimum. I don't have enough cell reception here to have T-Mobile internet and I don't have any with Verizon or AT&T. My only option for backup internet is to wait for Starlink.

I don't understand how a company that provides phone service and E911 can get away with not having redundancy for power outages.

my suggestion, contact executive customer relations to let them know your thoughts, then FCC, your state attorney general, and local politicians.

I called business customer service, because calling residential customer service would be a waste of time. I spoke with a customer service rep who reached out to someone about having batteries in the fiber cabinet. I was told some of the fiber cabinet's have batteries and some don't. The rep told me they had to schedule a service appointment for them to come out and confirm if there are batteries in there or not. Apparently the technician has to come to my house first so I scheduled the appointment for this Friday. We'll see how it goes.

Don't forget your phone and internet will still not work if your gateway and telephone are not on some form of backup power.

Good luck!

Ask the tech if you can follow him to the OLT and check it out with him.

I asked the rep about a service charge and she stated the only way I would get a service charge would be if I canceled at the door or if I wasn't home when the tech arrived. The service charge would be about $80.00. We'll see what happens Friday

Well, if the tech shows up, goes to the OLT and there's no batteries, then there's no service charge because the loss of service was Altice's fault.

I guess Altice has three days to install the batteries.

This sounds like a.) they didn't understand a bloody thing you were saying b.) they set you up for a scam re: the service fee.

This is gonna be good. Popcorn ready.

despite the issue not being inside your residence, they will find out a way to charge you $80, trust me on that.

Yeah, I'm aware of their shady service charge practices. If I get hit with the $80.00 service charge I'll deal with it if/when it happens. I'm just hoping the tech that shows up knows what they're doing. The fiber installation tech who installed my fiber service was an actual optimum employee and he was knowledgeable.

Why put that on the technician to know how to do or is even responsible for? This feels like an OSP-design consideration that was probably filtered down by management to not be proactive about OLT-level battery backup.

This just feels like a colossal waste of time for you and the technician. Either they're in violation of the FCC regulations or they're not.

So the guy shows up, confirms no batteries have been installed in the rOLT cabinet. You complain, talk to the contractor's supervisor, etc. They say they'll work on getting someone out there "soon" for what end? No CSR will have a fucking clue of what you're talking about and the supervisor probably gave you a Google Voice # that he will delete after talking with you.

You're better off running into the cabinet with your truck and waiting for them to come out and repair it. That way, you can stand there with a massive Reese's Pieces cup demanding they install it.

I agree.. whats to prove? batteries are not.. and then what? whine up the corporate ladder as you get passed around from dept to dept? you arent going to tell them how to run their business. This sounds like a big waste a time and year from now with a follow up of "there are still no batteries"

You're right, it might be a waste of my time. However, the issue is important enough for me to at least try and get it resolved. If I don't try then it'll never get fixed. If everyone had that attitude nothing would ever get done.

The technician come out today and I explained the situation to him. He went to the fiber OLT and confirmed it did not have any batteries in it. He told me that he's going to speak with his supervisor to put in a request to have batteries installed. He's supposed to follow up with me tomorrow, but tomorrow is Saturday so we'll see if he calls or not.

They should install the batteries given the nature of the weather in the area and frequent power outages. It's a worthwhile investment for Altice to do so.

Does Lightpath have battery backup? lol @limegrass?

Isn't Lightpath usually a PtP link between you and the headend? It'd probably have tons of backup at the headend if so

It depends. I have electrical handoffs (Ethernet), so you need power and functional backup batteries in basement of my building for it to work. Not sure what happens between my building and the headend.
