TMC posted : If they were able to meet their advertised speeds at my location, I'd save $45/month switching to WOW. That was appealing to me. I think the $30 unlimited fee that WOW was trying to charge would have ruined their ability compete as effectively.

As you know, RCN acquired the WOW! systems in and around the Chicago area on November 1, 2021 which may include your Internet, TV, and Phone Services. We promised to provide updates along the way to keep you informed of the progress we’re making to fully transition your service to RCN.

To that end, we have some great news to share. Effective February 1, 2022, data overages will no longer apply to WOW! internet customers in these areas.

What does this change mean for you?
As of February 1st, data overages will no longer be charged. Your February billing statement will reflect any overage charges incurred in the month of January, and beginning with your March billing statement, you will no longer see additional data overage charges. If you have previously subscribed to Unlimited Data, that charge will be removed effective February 1, 2022.

We still have your whole household covered for streaming, video conferencing, email, browsing, and gaming. And, we’re always here to talk through your Internet service options.

We’ll keep you informed
As always, we will keep you informed of the progress we’re making to transition your service to RCN and any changes coming your way. In the meantime, thank you for being a valued customer. We look forward to serving you!

Maybe it was a value-add to bake into the white paper to show projected revenue gains to potential bidders. They know the number of subscribers who use a lot of data and would likely be subject to a cap. Multiply that number by $30. Thats a lot of revenue probably. Companies do that kind of stuff all the time.

TMC posted : Well, so much for the WOW install. The salesperson promised up and down that my neighborhood had been upgraded and problems fixed. The installer came and measured the line with his meter and was only able to get 800/18 and those were the best readings. Ouch. The exact same levels I struggled with for a year in 2020 (which precipitated my jump to Comcast) are still present now. No way I'm dealing with that again.

You mean 2.5TB cap. If it was 2.5GB cap, I think everyone would be over the limit the first day after a monthly reset.

Depends on what you're actually streaming, and the service.

I was streaming Apple TV+ on an old plasma in the bedroom, and stil lused 14GB for only a few hours of watching. They send high bitrate content, Netfflix on the other hand is ~3Mbps for HD and ~15Mbps for 4K...

Apple TV is ~14Mbps for HD and anywhere from 22-42Mbps for 4K depending on the content, and the color quality shows on my 60" 4K in the living room.

However, I actually contacted them (WOW) by way of the online chat and was told caps are being dropped Feb 1st. I even asked if it was for all speed plans and was told yes.

Hopefully, they are indeed dropping the caps. I am actually a little surprised as I had noticed the RCN site's Chicago subsection had no longer boasted about unlimited data shortly after the WOW buyout happened so I naturally assumed they'd just eventually add caps to the current RCN customers. The RCN/Astound site still has wording about imposing data fees or forcing you to buy different plans though so they can give themselves some flexibility or enforce a "soft" cap.

Perhaps Feb 1st is when they will formally rebrand as Astound (the RCN site has already rebranded) in the former WOW areas as dropping the caps would be welcome news when they give customers the notice.

Edit: And a handful of minutes later and the tab is back again. And I see I am at 49% of my 2560 tab, using 1161.7GB thus far this month.

TMC posted : I know where I live, a lot of the lampposts here have the Verizon antennas on them, and the cabling has been completed. I'm hopeful that I'll get a strong enough signal to get faster speeds than cable. I think that's the only way affordable multigig will come here. I've given up on fiber.

I like having data usage charts as a point of curiosity, but without the penalty aspects. Hopefully the charts come back.

I no longer see the section on their website to check my bandwidth usage. I think there used to be a "services" tab that had it, but it is gone now. I do not see a way to check in the other tabs.

I had wanted to try switching over a couple of weeks or so ago and the unlimited data fee of $30 made it not worthwhile. So now it's worthwhile again. Monday is when I'll have them out to install.
