I am currently on AT&T, with gateway in passthrough mode and a Mikrotik router. I can capture traffic on the router WAN interface to see whether it's playing any games, but don't have a way to confirm that the AT&T box is properly behaving. (I could query DNS to a cloud server under my control, but it's possible that the result depends on the address or external routing.)
