It rarely takes 10 years to start cranking the screws. It's not exactly 'exploiting loyalty' .. The exact extent, and which speed tiers have seen greater or lesser impact at which ISP varies.

Keep in mind that there are off-tariff agreements with sales targets and lots of other manipulative wholesale pricing schemes out there. I believe at some point(s?) around 2016 Bell had a free install promo open to basically all indy ISPs. Meanwhile, there are sure to be 1:1 agreements as well. Just now I'm thinking, with VERY high tariff rates, off tariff agreements are going to start driving the indy ISP market more than ever.

With that in mind, it's possible Execulink decided to adjust which services they choose to emphasise. It's possible their cost structure is just different than another ISP. Or, maybe you are right, and they've decided to start milking slow-lane customers to subsidize gamers. Who's to say?

===============
I probably shouldn't continue, but I guess I'm in a mood :)

<said>said by weblurker:</said>
I should clarify what I meant. Second, the smaller customer base imposes lower costs.

I suspect Execulink is making the same gamble. They've increased the price of their 6 Mbs service by 75%, but in two stages. First from $35 to $44. That was to condition their customer base to large price increases. That was smart because Teksavvy's price for 6Mbs is $45, so very few people will switch. The second step was the increase from $44 to $61. Making the price increase in one 75% step would have resulted in a massive number of defections.

$17 out of $61 is about 28%. Could you explain what plan you have and what have change ?

My account is 6 Mbs. For years it cost $34.95/month with a 400G monthly byte cap. A few months ago Execulink changed the account to $44/month unlimited. Now they've changed the price to $61/month. $17/$44 = 38.64% increase. Or, from the original price of $35/month, $26/$35= 74.29% increase.

My question was, is Execulink alone in implementing such a large increase? The CRTC decision should have affected all 3rd party ISPs.

weblurker posted : In their email explaining the almost 40% increase, they claimed this:

"In May 2021, the CRTC stunned everyone when they decided to completely reverse their 2019 regulatory decision. The end result is that we will continue to pay the much higher access rates introduced in 2016. This has forced Execulink, along with the other independent telecom companies, to evaluate their offerings and make some difficult decisions. Regretfully, we are left with no choice but to raise our wholesale internet rates and eliminate some older internet plans in order to continue providing the quality of service and support you deserve."

Have other ISPs increased their rates by the same almost 40% increase, and for the same reason?
