Re: Toronto Blue Jays 2022 Season Discussion

It's tricky. Take a big risk on a young, talented but unproven player or a smaller risk on an older, proven but lower-upside player.

The young star players nowadays don't want to sign deals before they become free agents. they are fine with their arbitration numbers which is still big money, then hit huge.

I am ...but this is different.....they're both young talented players and they should be locked up for many years to come.

The NHL players are mostly 2nd string players getting ridiculous 8 yr contracts that won't pan out.

For every older player that doesn't fully match their expectations on a long term contract (e.g. P.K. Subban), there is a younger player that either falls off the table performance wise (e.g. Taylor Hall, Jack Eichel) or suffers a career ending injury (e.g. Steve Moore). Baseball is probably even higher risk for young players - especially pitchers.

At least its 8 years max for your own player, or 7 year new signing. Gone are the 12-15 year contracts that are still on the books for some teams for players who havent played for a decade, and will be for a number of years.
