Re: HOW DID THEY GET MY IP ADDRESS?

PS Not all ISPs employ Static IPs, most filesharing  of a serious nature occurs on dynamic IPs, then the "agent" would have to have the ISP search for the assigned IP for a particular timeframe, a pain in the butt they would probably not accommodate without a court order.

There's no harm in posting private addresses (192.168.x.x, 172.16.x.x, 10.x.x.x). They are not routed on the Internet.

Just to clarify a few things regarding addresses.

Your router has a public IP address and a private IP address (the gateway address) and assigns private IP addresses to your computers using DHCP.

You have cloned your computer's MAC address to the outside interface of your router. (You may have specified which computer to clone using its private IP address.)

It sounds like you have configured everything correctly, however configuring a computer as the DMZ computer is a bigger security risk than moving his computer outside the router. (It creates a path to all the computers on your network.)

Was your son's address configured as the DMZ computer?

Another Rob...i see...well then..i think i will press that little "disable DMZ" button.because it was indeed configured as "DMZ"

Keep in mind that removing his computer from the DMZ will prevent many games from working, however you can forward the ports required for many games using the 'port forwarding' or 'virtual server' feature of your router.

You may want to consider other security measures. ie. software firewalls, a hardware firewall, etc.

The more I read, the more convinced I am that using file sharing programs, especially with kids, is wrong and leaves one open for too many insecure possibilities. I have stated before and will again that buying a specific song, paying for it in a store, and walking away legally owning it without question is the best method of getting it. I may be an old timer and not up on these new computer programs such as the old Napster and those that have followed, but one thing I will always know. My computer is secure from the problems that can be caused by this type of sharing which is considered as ho-hum, run of the mill kind of thing by all too many today, parents and teenagers alike.

Rusdi...it is a pleasure to read of someone who sounds like a very responsible parent. My hat's off to you!

Thanks jaykaykay "Rusdi...it is a pleasure to read of someone who sounds like a very responsible parent. My hat's off to you!" but the truth be known..my son brought his computer home from college (along with these files & a router) and wanted to "hook-up" to my connection..i saw no harm in this..till i got the letter of abuse from my ISP..and im afraid if it gets terminated as a result of his "activities"..i wont be happy.. and then..the action that i take after...may not be considered "responsible"

A slight murder is OK. I can relate. Mine are grown with kids of their own and they're now living their own hell. I always told them they'd understand some day even though they always thought they knew it all. They're now finding out they didn't know the half of it and never will!

if you son still want to download with wmx. just tell him not to share songs. set it up so he downloads to another folder that's not shared.
keep the shared folder empty.
they are going after people that they can download from.

if he has no files in the shared folder. they don't know what's on your computer.

Actually, there are two issues here.

One:

This one is obvious, serving copyright material.

Two:

Read your AUP and see if you can serve anything.

Reason for ISP contact:

They seem to have more money than the ISPs customers.

It is quite simple to find peoples' IP addresses on any Peer to Peer program.
