ahhh I got a question

Hello all welp I ordered my DSL and it "should" be here on the 24th(self install) I live in the town South of Gilroy, Ca. What I wanted to know was what type of service should I expect.. ????? I've read must of the reviews and they seemed to be from GREAT to *#&#*(poor) ????

Also why has there not been any type of legal action if they can't make good on any of their deals/support/pricing ect.... I may be way out in left field or taking the American way of looking at things but if the do SUCK that much then why has no one done anything but complaine to the tech ppl ??

any info is good info

Sorry if I over step my newbie bounds

You can expect "Anywhere from GREAT to *#&#*(poor)"! Seriously, each install is unique because there are so many variables involved. My advice: be an optimistic pessimist. What that means is, hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. That way, if you do get poor, you're not outraged. Then, if you get anywhere close to good or GREAT, you're pleasantly surprised.

Probably because, many times, the performance/etc they thought was guaranteed, really isn't (review the Terms of Service info under the policy link at the top of each page in this forum).

See above. Even if the performance isn't optimal, the alternative solutions may not be available, they have their own set of curses and/or whatever choice you have left, for the price, isn't even close to what you do get with DSL. IMO, most of the lawsuit threats I see are from frustration and/or posturing. I'm not saying all of the complaints are unfounded or without merit, but it's often like having to ruin a $100.00 pair of shoes in order to kick a dog who soiled your $75.00 rug. If you do, it's not going to clean the rug and you've blown $100 in the process.

Yea thanks... I'm just a little worried that its going to bomb and then I get to post my story here :P

but I guess anything is better then 56K that is not really 56K so if I get DSL that is not really DSL then nothing really has changed..

Any idea on the self install kit easy,hard,other.. ?

Thanks

As for the self install kit, sorry - I have no hands on experience with those (I'm on business DSL). But, there's no shortage of others who do have that experience and expertise who can help.

I didn't mean to dash any hopes you might have had - there's always the possibility you'll have the perfect set of conditions and get way beyond your wildest dreams. But, to expect that is like buying a lottery ticket, feeling that particular ticket is guaranteed to get you the BIG prize and that is the only satisfactory result.
My advice (again): Reach for the stars, but keep one foot firmly planted in reality.

The main variables are: your distance from the DSLAM, the condition of your loop (coils, bridge taps, nearby disturbers,) and the layout and condition of your premise wiring.

Don't have the paper anymore, but in our internal rag there was an article a few months ago that stated something like 80% of self installs are completed in an hour or less -- half of those with a phone assist.

Chances are your self-intall kit may be a few days late. However, your service should be turned on by the due date.

You can either be patient and wait for the equipment to arrive, or if you call them on your due date to tell them your equipment isn't there, they'll only push your due date further away. Your equiment will then arrive, and you will have no service.

I learned this from personal experience.

How technical are you? What kind of computer do you have? What kind of DSL modem have you ordered?

It took me 30 minutes to setup my DSL. Stick the NIC, install drivers, install Enternet, reboot, hook up microfilters, connect DSL modem, if in sync - connect, if not - you are screwed royally j/k

Good luck!

I used to live in GILROY. But I was serviced by GTE - now Verizon. Installation was quick and easy for me. Everything was delivered on time. The line was hot when I requested it.

Performance was great! I was seeing about 650-750 of my 768K line. Billing was easy and I had no other complaints, except when my job moved me from Gilroy to Tracy and I had to pay 100 bucks for early termination.

I take it your either in Holister or Salinas, I am not sure what you would expect from there. Or even if GTE/Verizon is your service provider.

Good Luck!

Ok here is where I'm at...

Thanks for all the INFO

Yeap I'm in Hollister the anyone who has been here knows its the death stop for anything that has Tech. in it.

But I got my DSL equp. today modem,ect.... AND the guy came to test my line... ALTHOUGH he said that I needed to call ASI and call in a trouble tick cause I had 2 load in my F2 area and needed to be COB'D Soooo.. LET the phone games begain... and they did......

1st) Called ASI and they told me that the guy did not know what he was talking about..... And told me that MY REAL line test was on the 15th.... and my everything OK date was on the 24th...

2nd) called DSL center.. They did not know anything in the EPC. SO they put me back in touch with ASI.

3rd) Talked to a different ASI and they again said that the guy did not know what he was talking about... but said that there was a trouble ticket ALREADY in for the 2 load lines and that by the 15 I might have sync....

ahhh I just love the games..

I plan on making a nice review so that others know

oh yea... why is that they can't send the Software in the same box ?????

Because we are just pawns in their DSL games. We don't matter, we're just customers. We don't know anything, we use our index finger tips to type on the keyboard, hell they even think that trick us into believing that DSL means Digital Subscriber Line, when it really means Distance Subject to Limitation and to make things even better, they split themselves up amongst different groups so that they wont have to work as hard in hopes they can serve us better.

NKVD (Hey . . .I like that name, lol):

I had to interject a few words here! I too had problems initially with PacBell! I had the $39 ADSL (384/128) for over 10 months before I did anything about my slow speeds. It was either PacBell's DSL or Cox@Home Cable modem service. And, I had had the Cox cable modem twice in the past with very unsatisfactory results, like downtime: first time was 5 days right after it was installed, and the 2nd and 3rd were three days each.

I thought I had received a fair shake from PacBell because my DSL was installed within three weeks of me ordering it. I "knew" that my speed could/should be faster. That is when a friend in Florida told me about DSLR and gave me their URL.

The first thing I did after joining back in early November 2000 was head to the PacBell forum. I found more help there than I imagined possible! And great information, which led me to calling PacBell and requesting that they remove the cap on my line (I now have the full 1.5 mps download) and I also ended up getting a new DSL modem.

The members here at all of the DSLR forums are very knowledgeable! They have "100's of years" of combined experience between all of the members here! Even the newer members (as I still consider myself) develop an expertise as they learn through trial-and-error.

Everybody helps each other out here and there is little if any heavy competition between individuals; we all love our own puters and do what we can to further our own personal interests and help others if we can as we go along.

When it comes to PacBell's service, there are several members and moderators here that work at PacBell so just hang in there and one of them will soon read your post and drop in.

Now, this is my past experience and I do not expect it to reflect on anybody else's.

Who told you? If it was the phone company, then it's as good as gospel. I recently had a tech tell me I was at 16,400 feet. That's about 4,000 feet farther out than I had been previosuly told.

If it was a reseller like Earthlink/Mindspring then it's almost a guess since they don't have access to the equipment that the phone company does.
