My coworker got that computer and it was nothing but trouble. To get them to work they need lots more memory or a seperate video and sound card. Youll notice in a while how it will start to stall.
--
If you can read this, your not illiterate

shinjuru posted : That was a nice bit Paladin. Glad to see you're back in action. Even if it's only at 85%. ;)

When I got my DSL, a POTS splitter was installed and I used my existing Ethernet card and used Enternet300 to connect through my Westell Wirespeed DSL Modem. I have since eliminated the Enternet300 software and now have my Linksys BEFSR1 do the PPPoE login for me. Connect to PBI and that's it. Real simple.

However, helping a friend out in San Francisco troubleshoot some problems with his recent Pacbell DSL/Compaq computer package I was left a little confused because his self install, although easy was loaded with different DSL Management software and what looked to me a different flavor of PPPoE connecting to different Prodigy, SBC, Pacbell accounts. Is this normal now?
--
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect.

Rip and Rebuild

Paladin$ posted : History:

10 Jan 2001 circa 2300 hours: Storm knocks a power line down -- lights fash on and off rapidly, randomly, and continuously for an hour or so. After a large flash outside (a transformer blowing) they go out and stay out. We had unplugged what we could but the rapid on/off was not kind. Unknown until later the Cayman router had reset to factory defaults.

11 Jan: Morning greets us with no electric power. The Coleman Lantern is brought out of the garage where it stays fueled up, waiting. Kids go to school, I go to work. About 9 am Valkyre fires up the 3KW Coleman generator, switches the essentials over to it, goes out on dial-up. E-mails So.Cal. Edison. They get the power up around 11 am. I get home, reset the Cayman. Have a good line, ATM cell lock, but can't get authenticated.

12 Jan: Take the Cayman to work, swap with a known worker. Reconfigure to the work settings and it works fine. Bring the work Cayman home -- still cannot connect. Try calling 888-900-9933. Told to call 800-506-2599. That line says they are closed and to call back during business hours -- and cites time spans that include the present time. Call PBI -- between the noise in the house and the long delays I give up in favor of calling the next morning.

13 Jan: Go out on dial-up and take care of business. About 11 am I call 800-506-2599 -- they are closed, but hours include 9-5 PST Saturdays. *SIGH* Call PBI. Near immediately picked up by a person with a drawl. Explain my problem, tell him rather than fight could he simply rip my PPPoATM and rebuild as PPPoE. He leaves for about 5 minutes, comes back to say it is done. I hang up. Reconfigure the Cayman for PPPoE. Connect. I am still capped at 768/128 and a quick trip to Megapath says: Speed test 654/110 kbps -- 85-86% line speed, not bad.

I would have liked to retain my PPPoA, simply to be different -- but you have to pick your battles, it is far easier to deal with tech support if you are closer to their normal standards.

--
TeleCommunications Installation and Maintenance since 1966
