Speedstream 5260 -- All Red LEDs And No Help!Well, this morning a friend of mine who also has SBC DSL here woke up to find all the LEDs on his Speedstream 5260 red. Turning it on and off did nothing, and I searched the web and feared the worst.
It was quickly confirmed with a call to SNET and them telling us that it was indeed fried. They stated that their warantee is 1 year, and since it has been past that (around 1.5 I think), they will no send a new one. They did however state that there is a lifetime warantee through the manufacturer (which they had told me before) and we should contact them.
We contacted them and were told that it is only a 1 year warantee and even if we claimed it was newer their techs would find out and deny the claim.
So basically my questions are as follows:
1) What is the real warantee deal here? 2) Are there any hard resets that might work for this modem? 3) Does anyone have any ideas what the next step would be assuming all else fails and a new one has to be aquired -- purchase directly through SBC or what?
Thanks for any and all help! |

Efficient warrants this LAN modem for a period of 1 year against defects in material and workmanship, so on and so forth. From my 5260 installation guide book. |

Thanks for the replies everyone, and I'm having him put it in the freezer right now.
Anyway, I thought I saw one right on the SBC website for $99 -- I believe it was the 5360 (?). I assume that would be the appropriate replacement piece.
Where can we find one cheaper, or if the 5260 is better, where can we find one of those cheap -- and gauranteed (not like eBay, with one already burned out, rather go new).
Thanks! |

» store-psg-usa.com/index.htmThis is a link for a store that sells quality DSL products. edit...this is a Westell modem, but it is just as good and is supported by SBC/SNET. [text was edited by author 2002-07-23 00:15:55] |

Is it just me or are these thing too expensive. It seems to me that a four port switch/router/firewall is doing a hell of a lot more sophisticated work for alot less money. Why are these modems so expensive??
Cause they got ya!! They are willing to give them away to get you hooked on the bandwidth and if you have a problem they know you are going to spend what ever it takes to get it fixed. |

True, they do seem expensive, but that is a pretty close rate to what the manufacturer charges. You may be able to buy one direct from efficient networks. 5360 modems can be found at » www.efficient.comThey have the 5861 routers as well. [text was edited by author 2002-07-23 07:53:20] |

You'd think that SBC would offer some sort of replacement plan, or warranty policy that you could buy...like what Circuit City does. |

There is in the SWB region, but I don't think it was ever offered for SNET. It is called DSL protection.
Also, SNET now offers a one year warrenty through SNET for equipment.
This is a new plan, and it just pertains to recently installed customers. |

E-bay is the way....My modem started acting up about a month ago too, so I bought one up on e-bay for $55. No hassles. Just gave the person the quick buy price and received it a couple of days later. I used Pay Pal to make it quicker. |

Re: Speedstream 5260 -- All Red LEDs And No Help!Just to add to this discussion...when it comes to a replacement modem, if you get the Efficient 5360, please make sure that if you get a modem with P/N 060-5360-023, that you check out the thread I started and flash the firmware. You can read all about it here: » Alrighty then, efficient speed stream modem probsGood luck...sorry to hear about the modem / router, but it might make an interesting disassembly / investigation project. You can't really lose right? It's already fragged, you might as well learn something. Peace |

Ok, nw I'm really, REALLY, scared. Just this morning I walked outside my door and find a brand new Speedstream 5360 sitting next to my door. It's in the box, like it came as part of a DSL kit, but it's just the modem part. The box has no address, which is also why I figure it was part of the kit, and no delivered by the USPS. The box has been opened, but inside the modem and power supply appear to be sealed. The serial number indicates it's an older one, one that needs to be flashed. It even has the extended warantee card inside of it.
Who did it? It's really freaking me out, I don't recall giving any of you my address.
I didn't tell anyone else about this problem, other than my friend who's having the problem.
Or is this just some really strange coincidence? [text was edited by author 2002-07-25 12:56:06] |

The QUALITY of the people on this forum never ceases to AMAZE me. It seems that just when you think the bar is raised as high as one can reasonably expect, it is raised HIGHER still!
I can personally vouch for the people on this forum - From MrFixIt, TTAM, MrRT, and a bunch of other great people at SNET/ASI to EMEAD with his personal crusade to the tweak Gods (not to mention the fact that he PERSONALLY delivered a bunch of cat5 cable to my house)!
Double Kudos to the incredible folks at SNET/ASI! I am PROUD to be associated with all of you! |
