Re: Samba

Am I reading this right? Is it possible to share files between Linux and Windows without having to resort to ftp?

Uh, yeah...
SAMBA lets a Linux server serve files to a Windows PC and/or act as a domain controller for Windows. It also has a client to allow you to browse netbios shares that are on your Windows PC. Yes, TCP/IP IS REQUIRED on BOTH computers. And for that matter so is Client for Microsoft Networks on the Windows PC.

In case anyone's interested, I've just put up a few screenshots of my Linux/Samba box from work. This is very much a Windows NT environment, but my box fits in just nicely and no one's the wiser. ;)

Here's the address: »www.mindspring.com/~hall ··· mba.html

It also does intranet and ftp serving.

I'm quite proud of this:
[hall@dayis3 hall]$ uptime
11:08am up 344 days, 6 min, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
The "users" does not include people connected via Samba, only people locally logged in. "smbstatus" shows almost two dozen connections.
