kschang posted : More info... Turning off HTTP 1.1 helped in about 50% of the cases.

Here's what I learned so far from the technical side:

IE IGNORES the content type sent by the server (using HTTP 1.1). It actually reads the first 256 bytes and guesses the file type from that. If the content is HTML, it then tries to find the encoding, and often it guesses WRONG.

Apparently, IE6 assumes that all text streams are now in Unicode instead of regular Windows ANSI, and no amount of programming will convince it otherwise. I tried to look for a way to simply DELETE "Western European (ISO)" from the menu choice, but it's NOT in the registry any where. I even tried UNinstalling my Chinese browser support, no joy.

Turning off http1.1 support helped in some cases, but Windowsupdate itself still doesn't work. After a few bits of fidgeting, I got the catalog to come up, but no "download" button at all, even though I have selected one of the critical updates.

Chip0 posted : Some things you can try. Make sure no other windows are open, when you go there.
1. Shut down your AV and any security type programs, set them not to start on re-boot, and then re-boot(AV etc. may not be shutting down completely). That site is very sensitive.
2. Add the site to your trusted sites under the security tab in IE. Un-tick require secure server(on the bottom)Set the Zone to the default level.
3. Find your "downloaded program files" folder, and delete a control titled CV3(it might be corrupted). It's the activex control for that site. When you go there, it will see that it's not there, and ask you to download a new one.
Let us know how you made out. Good luck.
--
Elevators smell different to midgets.

kschang posted : But that's the problem... Windowsupdate, when I go to the site and pick product updates, or go there directly to Critical Updates, I get the top menus and left menus, but nothing in the middle. If I pull the pictures individually they come up, but they won't show up in the site itself.

I don't know which update it was trying to install because I can't see it! :-/ I am pretty sure I already have the May update, so it has be after that...

Sometimes, I was able to get that "Please wait, scanning for updates" pop-up, but nothing happens after that.

I've tried both NAV on or off.
Ginger5 posted : If you could tell us which Windows update you're attempting to install would help.

Any chance your antivirus is interfering? I suspect your anti-virus software (or firewall) is the trouble with your mention of "scanning pop-up".

Try downloading, save to desktop. Sign off your connection (dsl, cable or dial up), disable firewall (if you have one) AND disable anti-virus. Then try install by opening the new desktop icon, & reboot if prompted.
kschang posted : Need some help... I have PacBell DSL, Win98 (regular, not SE), 192 megs of RAM, IE6 with the patches.

I tried to load Windowsupdate the other day for a critical update, and the site will NOT come up. It loads and stops. I don't see any of the menus. Sometimes I get that "scanning" popup, but nothing happens after that.

I checked my security settings (medium, tried medium-low), my file association, etc. All look okay.

I am NOT running a firewall, just NAV.

I don't recall any recent changes to the system.

I've tried reinstalling and repairing IE6, no effect.

I can't even get the MS support site to open up correctly (and going there without IE is pointless).

Any ideas on what I should try next?
