Re: Qwest DSL newbie ?? alternatives to cisco 678 ??

Very good! Well, now you've peaked my interest. I'm perfectly happy with my Cisco 678, but I like to tinker.

Having read all the info on the links you've supplied, and having followed various links from those pages, for the last few hours, it looks to me, an efficient noobie [that's a pun, son], that the Speedstream 5861 would be a more desirable alternative to a Cisco 678 than a Speedstream 5660, i.e. a 10BaseT 5861 using a single port into a 10/100 switch. Do you have any experience with, or any thoughts or comments about the Speedstream 5861.

Checking completed items on eBay, it seems that if you're patient you can get a 5861 for about the same price as a 5660. Here's proof:

Speedstream 5660:
»search-completed.ebay.co ··· cSearch=

Speedstream 5861:
»search-completed.ebay.co ··· cSearch=

Sorry if I'm asking too many questions, but this thread IS about alternatives; plural...

edit - I knew I'd mess up some of those numbers

I use a 5861 & support another 5861, both on Qwest. I also support a 5781 on ATTBI which is the router only version of the 5861. While the Cisco 678 is a fine unit, I'm more comfortable using these the Efficient units. You do need to be self supporting if you use these with Qwest. BBR has a strong Efficient forum to learn how to master your 5861.

Then you should take some time and check out mholtum's site on Cisco Router Help Site.

OMG!!! You don't know how many times I visited that site when I was setting up my original 678...

While I like Cisco 678's [snagged another one on eBay last night] I don't consider them very user friendly. The learning curve was V steep at first. It really didn't help matters when the previous owner forgot to furnish me with the passwords. It took three days of intensive reading to figure it out, including many visits to the site mentioned above, and several others. I can set one up with my eyes closed now, but at first it was a real puzzler.

I saw some screenshots of the 5861 GUI interface and couldn't believe how simple it looked in comparison. So, I think I'll hover around eBay until I snag one for $75, or so, and give it a whirl.

Thanks to all!

Plugging my site? LOL The Cisco's can be troublesome, but with some research they can be rock solid. I love mine. I have 3 new ones in reserve in case of crashes since they arnt being made any more... Knowing them inside and out helps..
