The memory card is a required component for game saves...fundamental in most PS2 games.
In the days before (and even for a while after) the dawn of memory cards, many games used a password saving system.

That's like using a 2nd controller as an example.
Some turned based multiplayer games allowed all players to share the same controller.

How about the PS2 stand?
This has no effect on games, games do not have to support it.

Wheel controller?
Just about every racing game does support it. I'd not even want to attempt to use one with a non-racing game.

DVD remote?
Not used for games. No need for games to support it.

Gameshark?
A true unlicensed 3rd party item that actually does work with just about every game out there. It requires no game side support to work.

Multitap?
If a game is to be played by more then 2 people at the same time, this is used. Not all games, by design, would have a use for this, but the ones that would, do.

Light blaster?
All light gun games (to my knowledge) work with it. I'd not expect a non-light gun type of game to work with it at all.

Fishing controller?
Is there even a fishing controller for the PS2? And does it really offer anything that a standard control pad doesn't? And therefor does it really need any kind of game side support?

How many people have a light blaster and fishing controller?
Everyone interested in playing light gun and/or fishing games I'd guess.

e.g. If the light blaster were included you would see more support for it in games. But it wasn't...so you don't.
I disagree. Light gun games have traditionally not been super popular. Even systems like the original NES (which was originally packaged with a light gun) never had a ton of light gun games. There is only so much you can do with the genre.
Oh, and the PS2 networking adapter is a 1st party product, not 3rd party. Eventually we may see 3rd party versions of it based off of the 1st party specs.
