And since it's not built it

No one will be supporting it. The fact is 3rd party products are purchased by so few people that it won't find wide spread support by developers. $40 for the adapter and another $100 when the drive is released pushes the PS2 price point way up. Sony would have better served itself by putting these efforts into a closer PS3 launch date.

Madden and SOCOM will end up being the only widely adopted titles for PS2 gaming. Of course none of this is gonna stop me from picking up adapters for both of my PS2's.

Actually, ELN will be providing limited support for dial, DSL & Ethernet-based cable.

I'm talking about "software" support. Game developers won't develop for multiplayer unless A LOT of people buy the device. The same will happen with the HD comes out for PS2. They won't use it unless A LOT of people have a HD for their PS2.

Sounds like the initial sales of the adapter are pretty strong. You might just get that support from developers.

The memory card is a required component for game saves...fundamental in most PS2 games. That's like using a 2nd controller as an example.

How about the PS2 stand? Wheel controller? DVD remote? Gameshark? Multitap? Light blaster? Fishing controller? How many people have a light blaster and fishing controller? e.g. If the light blaster were included you would see more support for it in games. But it wasn't...so you don't.

count, you have heard of Final Fantasy XI, right? the game will not only be requiring broadband, but will also require the hard drive component as well. hardware like this is only as popular as the amount of 'killer' titles coming out for it. considering how many pre-orders my store has seen for SOCOM and the reviews it's gotten, it has a huge chance to be the first 'A' title.

online gaming is the future of consoles, and this generation's version of it (X-Box and PS2), is going to flood the market where the Dreamcast only trickled in.

Some support. Earthlink agents recieved two walkthroughs on the 25th on how to support the network setups on the PS2 adapters. This is a laugh for ELN support cause no one knew we had to support the network adapter setups...

I think you're right, but players should be able to compete in a game with various consoles, not just PS2 or the X-Box. Proprietary platforms are dinosaurs in a wired world.

In the days before (and even for a while after) the dawn of memory cards, many games used a password saving system.

Some turned based multiplayer games allowed all players to share the same controller.

This has no effect on games, games do not have to support it.
said by Count Hogula:
Wheel controller?
Just about every racing game does support it. I'd not even want to attempt to use one with a non-racing game.
said by Count Hogula:
DVD remote?
Not used for games. No need for games to support it.
said by Count Hogula:
Gameshark?
A true unlicensed 3rd party item that actually does work with just about every game out there. It requires no game side support to work.
said by Count Hogula:
Multitap?
If a game is to be played by more then 2 people at the same time, this is used. Not all games, by design, would have a use for this, but the ones that would, do.
said by Count Hogula:
Light blaster?
All light gun games (to my knowledge) work with it. I'd not expect a non-light gun type of game to work with it at all.
said by Count Hogula:
Fishing controller?
Is there even a fishing controller for the PS2? And does it really offer anything that a standard control pad doesn't? And therefor does it really need any kind of game side support?
said by Count Hogula:

Everyone interested in playing light gun and/or fishing games I'd guess.

I disagree. Light gun games have traditionally not been super popular. Even systems like the original NES (which was originally packaged with a light gun) never had a ton of light gun games. There is only so much you can do with the genre.

Oh, and the PS2 networking adapter is a 1st party product, not 3rd party. Eventually we may see 3rd party versions of it based off of the 1st party specs.

correct hoggy.

The real question is when is the ps3 gonna come out. The quicker that happens, the less xbox is going to intrude into the market when the huge titles come out (project ego). If they would have put the manpower towards getting a quicker release date, they would have been better served.

Of course, it is Sony... When you make the cd's for $1 and sell em for $10 and you and your buddies have 95% of the market..... They probably don't care too much... That manpower and money is the equivalent of a penny for me.

The network adapter is different than all of these others. The adapter allows you to play people across the country if you wanted. People are attracted to online gaming and playing others while being hundreds of miles apart. I sure am!
