How Much Disk Space Do You Use?Well I'm about to redo my computer again. I've been trying keeping Linux off my personal box for the longest time. But since I'm going to be doing a lot of work stuff on my box now, I need to put Linux on it. Since I'm going to have it on my box, I'm going to use it for personal use. I've never used Linux for just personal pleasure. So I'm not sure how much room I'll eventually end up taking. I guess the install is about 2GB and then my tools will be another 1 to 2GB.
How much do you guys actually use (not including the install, tools, or MP3s). I'll be keeping my MP3s on my Windows partition. So I guess I'm looking for program space. I was thinking 6.5GB...but I was debating 8GB and 10GB. To be honest, I would like my XP & .NET partition to have the most space since that's where most of my programs are (yes, no Linux version).
So with that all said, what would you recommend? |

well, not a useful answer to you.. but your post made me look at my drive space and I discovered my root partition is nearly full.. eeek.. should have an alert for that..

I consider myself quite frugal when it comes to disk usage. :) |

I have a fairly stripped down linux. In total, it's about 460Meg but it does include all my tools.
bash-2.05a# du -c -m --summarize /usr/local /usr/X11R6 /usr/lib /usr/bin /usr/sbin /usr/share /var /lib /bin /sbin /boot /etc 341 /usr/local 104 /usr/X11R6 1 /usr/lib 1 /usr/bin 1 /usr/sbin 3 /usr/share 1 /var 1 /lib 1 /bin 2 /sbin 1 /boot 4 /etc 456 total
The majority of my tools live in /usr/local. |

I squeezed RH 7.3 on 2GB of space, not counting swap, but it's like 94% up.

I keep my mp3's on a fat32 part (not currrently mounted) for sharing mp3's betweem my dual booting OS. I keep a lot of crap in /home. I really should clean it out.....
That said I have a lot of proggies installed on /usr. It is 10 gigs, but for me that is pretty much overkill as seen by the use %.

Thanks guys. It looks like 6.5GB should be enough. I guess that's about 2GB of crap I can put on after the installation and all of my tools. |

I haven't had time to make the mount points all nice yet, but /d is my XP drive, /a is mounted from my File server (Apps) and /b is also mounted from my File server (Games) :) |

I could recover a lot of space from /var as I haven't deleted the temporary portage files. I've installed both KDE and Gnome, XMMS, OpenOffice and Sun's JDK 1.4. So 6 gigs for Linux is pretty reasonable. /pub contains all my MP3s (I've actually ripped most of these myself from my personal collection) as well as backup copies of software CDs and various GNU/Linux ISOs. The hard drive is 100Gs. |

And here it is with KDE and Gnome installed onto a nothing more than a emerge system. Not to shabby, considering how big my Redhat & Mandrake installs used to be. |

Back in the old days (late 80s) when I used to admin a System V 4.3 (certified) box, I set up a cron job to warn of impending disk full issues. I don't have the csh script anymore, but I set it up to perform a 'df', parse and cut the use%, check if it was over 90% and then send me email if so. My shell script skills are a little rusty (OK - a lot rusty), but this should be pretty easy to do. |
