Ok I went to home depot but didn't see any 600 grit sandpaper. Instead I had to get this black sandpaper brand called Norton assorted grit paper.
Is this stuff any good? Well I tried to follow the faq tactic here at BBR on lapping and I think I'm getting somewhere at least. I rinsed the sandpaper with water and because I have no elbow grease I used dishwasher liquid to stop it from sticking as was recommended on overclockers.com.
I start sanding but all that black gritty stuff gets all on the heatsink. (Is that normal?) I washed it all off and started doing it some more and there was gunk forming on the sandpaper now. (Is that normal?) So I washed off the heatsink and noticed there are less machine marks. I probably did something wrong so can someone give me their insight on this?
it sounds like your doing it right if the machine marks are going away. try running to an auto parts chain. they would have the 600-1000 grit paper. they might have it sold by the sheets there too. when i lap i go.... 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000, 2500.... at $0.43 a sheet thats only $3 per laped hsf/block
believe it or not i was a complete n00b when i started a couple years ago, had not one clue. its just research, trial and error and a few fried pieces of hardware like everything else its just practice and learning.
