anon posted : Well...attbi has done it again. Their tech support is deplorable. I am getting very high pings. Att sees the same high pings when they ping my modem. I currently live in arden area and will be moving to midtown this month. i an strongly considering dsl, but I dont want pay for a phone line in my apt(i live off my cell-phone). So, you need an activated phone line to get dsl, right? ir is there some special setup that pac-bell can do to turn on dsl with getting a phone connection? i guess that was one of the pluses for attbi...no phone needed. anyways...any suggestions will be appreciated.
thanks!

anon posted : Having done similar tech support work for AT&T Worldnet a while back I can vouch for alot of what Raygun2000 says. The problem is most ISP's outsource their techsupport to a third party company. AT&T did this with their worldnet support. I can tell you that Worldnet tech support only got $10/hr and alot of them had relativley basic knowledge of PC's...if at all, was a college student trying to pay their way or what not. In fact most tech support doesn't get paid hardly anything, and has this separation between them and the main company where if something blows up, they are powerless to do much beyond notifying the main company. After that, they're helpless, especially if the main company does nothing.

Also the lion's share of the calls come from people who in some cases had no business being anywhere near a PC. I've only seen 5% of the calls come in where it is something relatively major. (This changes when something goes down and then we'll get a flood of calls with as many as 250 in the queue)

FI

Raygun2000 posted : As one of the people who does tech support in canada and is "useless" I must agree with you. I get a lot of calls from your area with people who have bad connections. From reading all the posts here I can tell who's being affected by the problems. However, that does no one any good because I can:

a) I can transfer your call to tier 2, where if they can't fix your problem by powercycling or reinstalling your nic driver will send a tech to your home.

b) skip tier 2 and just send the tech out.

c) send a ticket into the "technical team" who have NO power to actually fix your problem as its a problem with the network in your area and these people don't deal with the actual network (split overloaded nodes etc).

That's the 3 options that tech support has. The best we can do is the tech and most of the time he will just replace your modem and tell you it's fixed. You might get lucky and get a tech who will actually admit to the problem (that its just a poorly implemented and or overloaded network in your area). Now, the fact that the tech might actually tell you the problem won't fix it because most of the time he can't do anything either.

I've had a caller from grand rapids michigan (tons of angry users from that area on this board) who is never getting above 400 k download tests. A far cry from 1.5 megs. There's been 20 tickets created for him, like 5 truck rolls and still nothing fixed. There was notes on his account indicating that the techs *know* the problem is an overloaded node but the local supervisor (who would approve or look into fixing the overloaded problem) refuses to fix it. The customer has been told this by the techs who go to his house. He then calls us and yells at me. I have absolutely no way of fixing this so I sent him to tier 2 and tier 2 schedualed yet another tech. How can the 6th tech fix what the previous 5 failed to? It's just a cycle where the customer gets the runaround.

So don't get mad at tech support, especially the useless ones in canada. We get paid $10 canadian (6.50 american) per hour to talk nonstop calls and we are given no power and tier 2 has no power to fix anything and my supervisor only cares about my scheduale. You should be mad at ATT for not knowing how to run a company.

Tech support isn't ATT anyway. We don't work for ATT. ATT doesn't pay us. We are outsourced.

So basically, there's no way to fix your problem so you just have to live with it because ATT doesn't want your problem fixed.

I've spent most of the weekend trying to get someone's attention, but AT&T's "tech support" is worthless (and in Canada!!!).

AT&T is awful. Simply awful. And they've erected a brick wall between us and them. Tech support is in Canada and clueless. I've asked repeatedly for names/numbers of management and have been refused. You simply can't get past the support contractors to complain to anyone in management. They probably think everything is just peachy. AT&T, as far as I'm concerned, is operating a fraudulent business here in Sacramento. They have a monopoly on broadband (many of us can't get DSL due to distance issues). If you look at their network status page, is always says everything is fine, they're continuing to sign up customers, but THEIR SERVICE DOESN'T WORK!!! It's been unusable a good part of this year and last.

If anyone has any ideas about how to seriously knock them upside the head, please share. If anyone is interested in organizing something a little more powerful than posting messages here and spending evenings and weekends trying to find intelligent life in "tech support", please contact me at nono2spam@yahoo.com.

I, for one, am ready to make a hobby of making AT&T hurt. When they upgrade to the 256 upload speed my connection turned to crap and it sounds like i was having the same troubles you all are having now. I waited it out for about 2 weeks, i would always get my pc light on my modem flashing which meant the modem was losing sync with my computer. I called att they tried to tell me it was a bad ethernet card. i was like ya ok whatever. 2 weeks went by and that problem disapeared. Then my pings went to 90 when everything was fine from june to july(no pc light blinking at all). August hits..... same problem getting the pc light losing sync. It was brief only about 2 days but for the past 2 weeks my ping is now 60. Keep in mind the ip addy hasnt changed. If any of you are getting the blinking modem light this is my advice. Restart (yes i know its a pain when your in the middle of something) then unplug the cord from the modem as well as the wall for about 2-3 minutes then turn it back on. Its not going to work for all of you but be assured that your lack of service as of now is ATT fixing their shit. From january to now my ping has dropped 60 MS and it seems that it ALWAYS got better after my connection sucked for a few days thus making it seem to me that i was down due to them fixing their network or making it better.
mwgamer posted : They came out to my house a few weeks ago. I was having similar ping times like yours sometimes even higher. The problem they said is the nodes are overloaded and they are working on splitting them.

My cable has been better in the last few weeks but at times I still get crazy high ping spikes. Ive ran line tests and showed the tech. I pointed out at a certain router I am always losing 2 percent of my packets. Ive noticed a few others are losing packets at this router too. He made a note of it and apparently it hasnt been fixed yet.

Keep calling and hopefully someday it will get fixed.

JBaughb9 posted : Yeah, I totally have been having major problems. my service is fairly new (just moved up here from monterey (also with attbi)) and I've been getting dropped like mad. 10+ times a day. Talked to a couple tech support people. One even came over to the house and did something that didnt help at all. I've also been having problems downloading through kazaa. everytime I search for something that should obviously be found it always returns little, if no, results. I dont know whats going on but I'm calling tech support on monday and complaining. maybe i can get a few free months out of it.

Continuing Sacramento Problems

nccr posted : First of all, I would like to thank everyone who is devoting their time and effort to read/contribute to this thread. I'll try and make it brief. I live in the Sacramento area and have been keeping up with the threads posted on the forum and resorted to starting a new thread after seeing the last one about this topic was nearly a month old. For me, the problems started at around May. I had consistent pings > 1500 ms. About a month or so later, the pings lowered to around the 400ms range, but my speeds still stayed very low (about 300kbps/60kbps...oh how I wish I was talking about kilobytes). Ping issues were fixed for the most part until last month. Then came the drops in connectivity. Using pingplotter to monitor my connection, I see that I am dropped more than ten times in a day, sometimes even five times in a single hour. It used to hit me only at night, (8PM-midnight), but now it affects me any time after about 11:00 AM. I've made at least 10 calls to technical support. One person there was convinced I had to replace my network card. I've talked to a supervisor who apparently had no knowledge of what was going on at all in the Sacramento area. The first tech came out and said they had to replace the cable fixture outside of the house. He told me to expect a call in two days from the appropriate people. No call came and my ticket was closed. The next tech told me that they had a problem with the network and were working on a fix. If anyone else in the Sacramento area has been still having such connection issues, please post so that the rest of us will have at least some knowledge as to what is going on. Thanks again.
