www.informationweek.com/ ··· 028S0002PHILADELPHIA (AP)--Comcast Corp. said Monday it expects to complete its merger with AT&T Broadband next month and become the nation's largest cable television provider.
Comcast and AT&T previously said they hoped to complete the deal--valued at $72 billion in stock and debt assumption when first announced and revalued by the companies at $47.5 billion as share prices declined--by the end of the year.
Also Monday, Comcast announced third-quarter net income of $75.6 million, or 8 cents per share, an improvement from the net loss of $106.8 million or 11 cents per share for the same period last year--but far short of the 15 cents a share predicted by analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call.
Comcast, the third-largest cable television company with 8.5 million subscribers, had third-quarter revenues of $2.7 billion, a 12.7 percent increase from $2.4 billion in the period last year.
Stephen B. Burke, president of Comcast Cable, said the company would cut 1,700 jobs at AT&T Broadband's headquarters in Englewood, Colo.,
