ATT no longer supports routers, now what?yesterday i come home a start my browser and i get this page from ATT
"You've reached this page because you need to reconfigure some of your Network Settings
To access sites on the Internet, you must make some changes in your network settings. Your computer is currently configured with static (or hard coded) DNS (Domain Name Servers) Servers that are no longer in service. Our terms of service require the use of both dynamically assigned IP's and DNS servers which are supplied using our DHCP servers.
Below you will find more information to insure your computer is configured to use DHCP and receive DNS server information automatically.
If you are not successful in reconfiguring your settings and are automatically returned to this page after restarting your computer and powering on your cable modem, please call and speak to a Customer Care Professional. "
so i contacted them and they said they no longer support routers, now how do i get my network back up with cable internet on all computers? |

configure your router to use ATTBIs DHCP server. Leave all those fields blank. I do it without problems. |

Delete any DNS server IPs from your router's setup.
Make sure your router is set up without a fixed IP and to get its IP and DNS servers via DHCP.
What kind of router do you have? There are forums for all the popular ones here if you need help.
They can't tell if you have a router or not... and they do support certain routers for home networking. There's been a number of topics in this forum lately about this.

Here's an interesting thing.....
This morning I rebooted my router and now cannot get an IP address.
The router picks up 192.168.100.3 as the WAN address. I even tried to clone the MAC from the PC I originally signed up with.
Even better - I can get IP addresses with my PC and surf just fine.
I've got a Netgear FM114P router.
Sounds fishy to me.....
BTW I'm in 60202 (Evanston, IL) |

get this..... i went into my routers config, and then changed it to disable DHCP, then tried again, and i couldn't access my routers config again! so i shut my computer down, and waited a little while, then i reset my router with the reset button, and started back up, opened a brower and it was working again!!! it works just like it did before, i don't know what it changed but as long as it works, im happy |

DNS server maintenance going on all week long in some areas.
you will need to keep settings for DHCP ( ip and dns ) and release / renew ip until you can connect again. |

That explains my problems. I am having trouble with my connection just dying but the modem is still online. I get an IP lease of only 3600 seconds instead of the usual 4 days. Sometimes I can renew and release and get a 4 day lease but I can't browse. I ping the DNS servers and they don't respond. I try to visit broadbandreports by the IP address and I can't get to it. When I directly connect to my computer from my modem, everything works. FWIW, I am using a SMC 7004VBR router. |

Very interesting.
I have an FM114P router and am still having major problems.
If I put my PC on the modem everything seems to work great. My DHCP lease time is one hour.
If I put the FM114P on I get terrible response times, no IP address. It's all sporadic, leading me to believe it's a router issue.
So, I pull the RT314 out of the box and put that one on. It gets an IP address but response times are erratic *and* downloads are horribly slow (2Kbits/sec.).
I'm noticing different IP Addresses as well.
Veerrrryyyy strange. |

Everyone's probably sick of this by now, but here's an update.
If I put the PC on the modem, I get:
IP: 12.248.36.x GW: 12.248.36.1
If I put the RT314 on the modem, I get:
IP: 12.242.20.x GW: 12.242.216.1
If I put the FM114P on the modem, I get:
IP: 12.249.227.x GW: 12.249.227.1
If I release/renew I get different IP addresses on different subnets.
Sounds like a previous issue that they had before. I'm gonna reset the FM114P to defaults (again) and see if that helps. |

(bump) This morning my connection was fine....so I went to the SAS site (» sas.r5.attbi.com/) and checked to see what MAC address they had associated w/my account.. They had TWO addresses. I replaced one and it appears that they removed the second one - there was a warning stating that I could only have one PC connected unless I ordered additional IP addresses. So, hopefully the records are straight now. We'll see how things go after registering this MAC address. |

Things have been better tonite and all day today after re-registering with SAS.
It seems that they are working on a router, so all of my problems could have been due to the router issue.

In reference to the original title of the thread - I don't believe AT&T ever *supported* routers... they allow them to be there - but if you ever have any issues, they will ask you to take it out of the equation. -C |
