Re: 5260 serial port

Just wanted to bump this up again, I would like to instill a conversation on the topic of using a different 232 pump as mentioned in my previous posts, if someone has an idea for a better place to post this so the right people might see it and invoke a discussion over it, please let me know.

Anyone look into this w/me?

Thanks.

I think you guys are overkilling a dead horse. The modems are cheap. You can get a real 5660 cheap, and if you really want to add a serial interface, glue one 1489 upside down where the transceiver would go on the board. Connect it to a miniplug and your done.

Any advice on soldering this?
I use this gun to hand solder / de-solder surface mounted components: »www.newark.com/NewarkWeb ··· =35F3074
The size of parts it is capable of handling is as small as .02 by .04 inch up to 2 inch by 2 inch metal RF shields.
Sure, it costs a bundle, but it's worth every penny, IMHO.
Something to consider if you are planning to do more jobs like this one.
Warning: Gotta practice a bit before doing the actual job - you might burn a hole in the PCB.

Great job on your diagrams there uziq!!! Do you still have that extra chip? Noticed you are in STL... might even be tempted to drive up there and pick it up. I just flashed a 5260 last night and all was going well... UNTIL.... I changed the IP on the unit and it came back in the telnet window (error setting ip address) and ever since, I cannot communicate with it telnet or http. All I ever get from it is if I ping the ip that I tried to set it to, my pc then ends up with the routers mac address in the arp table. Wow that helps a lot!!!

IM me please at 511131 and let's hook up.

Take a look at me earlier post today Willing... I would like to consider your option too but with just the receiver will I be able to still do what I have read about typing default when I see the ... when it's first starting up and reset it to factory defaults? I was under the impression that one would need both the driver and the receiver to establish a two way serial connection. I'll have to get the 1489 from Mouser too cause Radio Shack doesn't carry it anymore.

Do you have a modified version of the faq that reflects using just the 1489? ... and where exactly did you pull your +5 from on the board inside?

I only have one of these to play with and very little money so I don't wanna mess it up anymore than I already have (my earliest post in this thread)

I did it with an external 1489 and a 5V supply. The 1489 works with a wide range of input power, so if the 5660 only has 3.3V , I think it will still work. I'll try it and see.

Thanks. I hope the diagrams help ya out. I don't have the extra chip anymore, but you could order one from Digikey for fairly cheap.

Well, this was my point, I think this chip I was looking at will just solder in-place of the 1489/88 combo, it's easier to find, and much cheaper, newer version also.

Thanks Will. I went ahead and ordered the pair from Mouser yesterday at a whooping 1.20 for 2 each. I'm hoping that this is a one shot deal and I won't ever have to use it again. Just wish that they had provided a quick short jumper in the thing to reset to factory defaults and I wouldn't even be having to do this.. just to do that.
