With notepad.exe create OEMINFO.INI and put the text (with appropriate edits) from my post above into that file. Close it and save it to the C:\Windows\System folder.

2. With paint.exe or another graphics program make your logo drawing. It should be no larger in size than 170 x 114 pixels. Save the file as OEMLOGO.BMP (bitmap) to the same folder :C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.

For example, the same image file was used for both of these logos. The version with no background was saved using 256 colors. The version with the black background was saved at 16 million colors. I imagine any color depth above 256 would work to force the black background to show. I haven't tried that experiment.

A couple of points to share with anyone reading this thread. The black transparency trick only works if you use 256 colors for you logo image. If you want black in your image use more colors. As seen above, 16 million colors will work with XP.

The help file posted may be an older file from Win9x as the directory given is windows\system. On XP and probably 2K the files should go in windows\system32.

To add your own custom OEM logo you need to do 2 simple things. You have to add a file called OEMINFO.INI and a 130 x 114 pixel Bitmap (.BMP) file called OEMLOGO.BMP to the windows\system directory. The contents of the OEMINFO.INI should be the following lines of text:

[General]
Manufacturer= Your Company Name, Inc.
Model=Kickass Graphics Machine
[Support Information]
Line1= This is just a test,
Line2=to show how easy it is
Line3=to add an OEM logo to the properties
Line4=tab of my computer !

The bold text is mandatory, the normal text can be your own text. If you need more lines just add line5= Line6= etc.

The bitmap should be a 256 colors BMP. The color black is used for transparency. Paint your logo on a black square of 130 by 114 pixels. Later you will see that the black is taken out by Windows and replaced with the actual background of the properties tab.

Once you have created a OEMLOGO.INI and a OEMLOGO.BMP place those in the Windows\system directory. If you now right-click on My Computer you will see your own bitmap in the properties tab. If you press on the Support Information button you will see the text you entered in the OEMINFO.INI.

Oh boy Breacker :) Making graphics does take time. For me, it takes hours. Trust me, you are not the only :)

Take that little flash animation I made with that mega tech logo sometime ago for instance. Remember? That thing took 6 hours to get the flash done and getting the timing right with a good, bright flash.
