Just got off the phone with ATT Broadband CS.

Click for full size
and here is what I came away with.

Problem is, every 3 days, like clockwork, the modem will need to be rebooted. After that, EVERYTHING is fine again, and as fast as can be.

In fishing about these forums, there is SUPPOSED to be a firmware update that can fix that. I talked to an ATTBI Tech (3 actually, Online Chat, Teir 1 and supposed* Teir 2) and they said that in order to get the modem firmware update, I need to talk to Motorola?

Who do I go to get a modem firmware update.

Also, the last lady I talked to said my HSI signals are "out of whack"... This is a screenie from the modem, and everything LOOKS fine to me.. can you all see something different?

Motorola Surfboard 4200
Software Version: SB4200-0.4.3.3-SCM01-NOSH
Hardware Version: 1
MIB Version: II
GUI Version: 1.0
VxWorks Version: 5.3

Guy over in the Cable Modem (Hardware) forum has the same problem.
Will a firmware update fix it? And how DO I get an update?

AT&T Broadband is not spooling the 4.4.2 version. I know that there is a way to manually do it. Some people in this forum have accomplished that task.

Could one of you who have successfuly done the upgrade manually kindly publish a "how-to" for all of us that are experiencing problems?

Well, if they are... how can I get it pushed down to me.

If they are not...

how can I get it.

I hate not being able to have my 2 machines (I am one of the people whom pays for 2 IP's) not being able to talk to one another, and when this happens, my machines cannot talk back and forth...

It is my understanding that AT&T is the only one that can push the config file. But I'm sure that someone else will correct me if that's wrong.

Mr Brad, different config files for different modem maybe?

Short of power cycling, I'm not sure how you would get the new config file.

If it was easy to update the config file yourself, that would tend to make it easy to put whatever config file in that you wanted (i.e. uncapping).

Just got done with my usual power cycle (for the heck of it)

1) Unplug modem
2) Make sandwich
3) Plug up modem

Takes me long enough to create and "test taste" the sandwich.... that the cable modem would be "clean" enough.

Need that new config... yarrrr!

and I do NOT want to do anything that might be construed as uncapping my modem...

i'm surprised your internet works very well at all...

that Signal to Noise ratio is pretty friggin bad... 25dB isn't acceptable, and is probably the root of all your issues.

The line is perfect... except for every 3 days that it decides to go for a nap..

Never have a problem when it works... it chugs along like a charm!

Speeds are NICE as well... notice no problems here.

that line is not perfect by any means. and that could possibly be why every 3 days it takes a nap on you.

25db is below the satisfactory snr level.

Well, perfect to me..

Speedtests come out in the range of over 1400 up and over 200 down...

DL's are snappy.

ATTBI is sending a truck my way this Wednesday to come check on the line...

but what can I do about getting the firmware???

Why Do Cable Modems Drop Offline?
A Cable Modem requires three main things to remain online once it is connected and operational:

Clean RF plant with a carrier-to-noise consistently above 25 dB in the Upstream, and above 35 in the downstream.

altho between 30 and 35 is fine.

straight from cisco's website ;p

The SNR could be a problem. But the "3 days" thing makes it sound like DHCP to me.

I had this exact same problem. Mine was caused by 1) an eminent IP renumbering, causing them to re-assign a new IP every 3 days and 2) I had a firewall set so that my IP address was not pingable. Their DHCP server would not issue me a new IP while I was not pingable (though it was OK during periods where my IP stayed the same for months).

If you're running a firewall (this includes XP's built in firewall), try enabling ICMP Ping (or disable "stealth" mode).

I have to agree with some of the previous POSTS. Your SNR is not correct. Time to have the downstream checked with a reliable QAM meter. It could be just about anything from the modem to the HeadEnd. Probably is a "noisey" amp. Could be the root cause of your service interruptions.

Update Firmware Help

A firmware may or may not fix it. im not sure. That firmware is known to have issues though. I used to have that firmware and quickly went to the 4.4.2 firmware and am ok now.

I know many people here recently want to update their firmware. For those who have 4.3.3 you can go to »danboy.net and get info on how to change the firmware to the newest one. (4.4.2). I only recommend those familiar with computers enough to understand how to do it. If you don't understand it, don't do it. Ask for help from someone who does. One thing that is required is the tftp server ip for your area. It's required and im not sure on how to get it. Chicago area seems to be 12.242.20.9 (ironically it's the ip for my sas server (sas.r5.attbi.com) try your sas server ip possibly. worth a shot.

For users with 4.4.0. It most likely wont work as your modem seems to think that 4.4.2 is not much of a difference and will tell you that your "image is current". There is software on the net to push the firmware (via SNMP for those who understand it) and i don't have it. once i find it i will post it. sorry :-(

Re: Just got off the phone with ATT Broadband CS.

-10 and below recieved power the Signal to Noise has to be greater then 35dB. signal above -10 the SNR can go lower... it scales the closer to zero the recieved power, the hypothetically worse the SNR can get without having uncorrectable errors. up to a point, 28-29dB is where i see most modems choke on QAM64.

Your instructions, they worked like a CHARM!

Now, in a few days, I will get to see a ATTBI Tech about the problems on my line... if there are any more that is.

I have 2 machines...

Since the DAY I got service activated at my house, I have had no change in IP, at all.

multiple reboots, renew/releases, everything...

the DHCP time will come and go, and the IP stays the same...

and it usually does not happen on the same day the DHCP lease is set to expire.

Re: Update Firmware Help

When trying to run ConfigEdit.exe to modify the contents of the hsd1.5M.cfg file, I get a window with a runtime error 372. It says that it failed to load control 'CommonDialog' from COMDLG32.OCX. My version of COMDLG32.OCX may be outdated.

What can I do about this?

Thanks,

I had to do the following:

Go online
Get DLL
VirusScan DLL
Load DLL to memory
Use DLL..

Use google to FIND DLL

(hands sweating a little)

Is this to say that I grabbed a Trojan Horse? Or does that DLL contain the Active X CommonDialog control that I need?

And how would I 'use' that DLL?

Thanks,
