Firmware for SB4200

How does one request an upgrade for the firmware on a cable modem or will Adelphia provide this upgrade as needed?

I ask at my local office for an upgrade once, when I noticed my firmware was outdated, and they said no they don't do that, they just gave me the newest modem they had in stock.

There's no reason to update the firmware unless there's a problem. If there's a problem attributed to firmware, I think your modem will be updated automatically by Adelphia.

It seems that I remember them doing a FW update here once for lost packets.......every 12th packet was being dropped.

I think so anyway

MOtorola releases the firmware, Adelphia actually upgrades your modem automagically with it.

Right, but they don't normally do FW upgrades unless there's an issue....right?

I mean, it's not a normal thing they do every time an update is released, is it?

I ran across this and not saying I would ever be the subject to such attacks, it is still an exploit that some would feel should be patched.

»www.securitytracker.com/ ··· 519.html

»www.vandale.nl is said to exhibit the exploit on the site although I have not been there.

Just 2cents worth. Thanks for the info.

Right. Usually there is a reason. I mean, think about it... a firmware upgrade can fail, and perhaps leave you with a hosed modem... much better to only do it when it needs to be done.

No cable company is going to do a FW update unless there is a SERIOUS issue. Swcox is 100% on the mark...

How many of you have seen what happens when a BIOS update goes bad? It's not very spetacular, but the end result is a toasted motherboard that cannot be recovered short of replacing your CMOS chip (do they still call em that?) if it's socketed, or desoldering it and resoldering a new one if it's not.

It is rare that it doesn't work as advertised, but it does happen, and I'd say I've had about a 1/4% failure rate on BIOS flashes...or 1 out of every 400. Not the sort of odds I'd like to play with unless 100% necessary. Newer (high end) boards have a recovery feature, but I doubt there is such a thing for a cable modem.

Back in attbi land, we had a few issues with the surfboard 4200. My modem was getting so bad that i would have to unplug it a few times a day. I thought it was just me but i found out that many people had the same issue. It was getting so bad that we just updated the firmware ourselves. 4.4.2 does fix a few important issues. 4.4.0 and 4.3.3 had a few major issues. you can check out our thread about the sb4200 and how we updated it here.

»Just got off the phone with ATT Broadband CS.
You would think that the cable companies would update the modems, but they don't. 4.4.0 and lower has a very major security hole that many operators refuse to fix. (an easy fix too). rr so far is slowly fixing it. ool also is. 4.4.0 can easly be uncapped. 4.4.2 cannot be. one would think cable companies would push the new firmware asap. but no....
