Is a download speed 90.5 kb/secIs this a good download speed? if i go to www.gamesdomain.com and download a demo. I get 90.0 kb/sec. my line is to be 1000k down 512 up. It appears to me i am getting only 1/10? thanks ------------------ |

you might be reading it wrong 1000kb (BITS) when you download it shows you kb(BYTES) each byte is 8 bits so 1000/8 = 125kb/s
which is good I would think. |

It is on that stock ie5.01 download window.
it says 90.5 KB/Sec
So if my line is 1000k down 512 up does that mean i am getting 90 out of possible 125?
I downloaded Microsoft IE 5.5 in approx 4 min.
I would think that was good, but i want to know if I am getting close to the max of my line.
thanks

125 KBYTE/sec Factor in overhead nad line conditions (also net congestion) and you should get around 95-100KBYTE/Sec yeah your gettign decent speeds However Im much more happier with my cable modem ownloading at 226KB/Sec --S4LKaT Oh it makes me wonder |

Yep, my cable is consistently doing 187KB/sec.
If you haven't installed the tweaks yet, you should. They really make a world of difference.

That is a bit low....actually with overhead it is closer to a factor of 10 rather than 8. With 1.5mbs service I consistantly get 147+KB/s on clear servers. (remeber server capacity and load count too, often it's as low as 40KB/s on a busy/low capacity site) MS is usually pretty fast though. so with a 1mbs line you sould be getting something over 100KB/s, so 90 isn't terribly out of line. ------------------ -Hayward » haywardm.com |

Well like I said MS is usually fast, but are auto DL's so you don't get a report. When I have downloaded from ZDnet they have been pretty fast consistantly. (As long as it is not redirected to an outside site, which dome files are. JUst going here and there, you sould get an idea in a week or so of what the high average is. Also have you tried the speed tests here and 2wire.com or elsewhere? ------------------ -Hayward » haywardm.com |

Best way to test is to download something rather large (Game demo, Microsoft Service pack , etc). If the download size is to small then the connection between client and server is still being made and the download speed will fluctuate. Pick something large that will take a few minutes and after a minute or so when the connection is stabilized you'll know what kind of speed you're getting. I've got a 1.5m/256 line and I get download speeds of around 150 kilobytes per second from most servers with peaks over 200. |

Another fast server is
ftp.freesoftware.com
Yeah, sorry, it's an FTP site. Do *not* use your browser to try it either !! Use an FTP client to get more accurate rates. |
